Always Preferred MAL as it's where I started. Over time I've had people move over to Anilist or simply use both and in this time I have found less and less reason to use MAL to the point I am not sure why I don't and many others move over to Anilist. (I have an account that every few months I import my list onto but I don't actually use it).

Obviously MAL bias asking here so here are some reasons to use Anilist if you haven't heard of it or tried it:

-Custom lists to divide shows up out of 1 massive Plan to Watch, for example,
-https://anichart.net/Fall-2022 for accurate seasonal releases that sync to Anilist rather than using a 3rd party like https://www.livechart.me/fall-2022/all?sortby=countdown,
-Superior personal and anime stats in everyway for stats nerds,
-Don't need a plugin to use a darker theme like Stylish themes,
-No limit on favourites,
-Apps for Anilist such as AL Chan appear far more polished on mobile, not always taking you into browser anyway,
-Extremely easy to import you MAL over to Anilist with half a dozen clicks,
-Search and filters for Everything whether its TV, manga, people etc is far easier and far more responsive and can do it without reloading pages,
-Anilist database also appears to be much larger if youre into reading, you'll often encounter stuff thats not on MAL,
-Choose your scoring system,
-Automail fork brings back your watch history if thats your concern.

Reasons you may not want to use Anilist really comes down to community. MAL has a community thats roughly 5x larger than Anilist, while also being IMO more of an old school forum with a profile you can customise and use more easily as everyones familiar with the format. Thus Anilist forums are for more dead so I have never seen any badge events, polls etc. But the people seeing this are the minority that actually use forums to keep in mind.
You also have less customisation with your profile if you like having a custom one, but that comes down to preference of the overall website layout.

Did I miss anything in this quick write out? Let me know your preference and why :)

Edit: While writing this I got a 500 internal server error RIP

I joined MAL in 2019 but moved to Anilist in 2020 because it was better, then re-joined MAL in 2021 and left Anilist permanently. The website of Anilist is significantly better than MAL, but the rules, mods, and community in Anilist are so bad it made me leave the website for good. So overall, I choose MAL.

I never considered moderation and rules. I haven't ran into anything of its kind on Anilist but I can totally see that for community.

Tried everything: anime-planet, anilist, anidb, kitsu, imdb and never liked them.

Anilist was not that bad, but one of my reviews was deleted out there, even though it was my first offence, an anilist mod started threatening me, ‘if you keep this on, we will make sure to make it so that you will never be able to review anything on our site.’ And I felt a bit disappointed, I reported that mod and, obviously, nothing has been done to them. That mod continued deleting my reviews and never even explained the reason and because of that I knew that I do not want to be on that website anymore. I do not even remember the name of that salty lad, but, hell, he was one annoying human being.

Between all the /a/ communities, I would prefer anime-planet to myanimelist and other websites. Too bad anime-planet is dead and hardly has any active members.

Voted for MAL.

Never considered all of these options for the very reason of inactivity. But I've noticed how I next to never communicate through these platform anyway and instead opt for things like discord. Maybe I should opt for whatever is best at doing its basic job of tracking content :)

Anime-planet used to and probably still is a very good database that has many things MAL does not. But like I said, if you want an active community, you will not find anything better than MAL, sadly.

As a listing platform AniList is better. MAL’s forums are just infinitely more active.

I've just gotten back into MAL after using nothing but Anilist for over a year. I'm pretty split on this question to be honest.

I actually prefer Anilist's forums a bit, even if they are poorly laid out and not as active. It's much harder to find gross TMI posts or creepy thread titles on there. I also vastly prefer the layout. Unlike MAL the website itself isn't a chore to navigate on a phone either. Profile customization is a bit better there too since you can use whatever photos you want rather than premade layouts.

As a database I prefer MAL. It's updated more frequently and uses the Japanese names as the default for searches. I also prefer the social aspect on here. If you want to be friends with someone on Anilist you have to follow each other. On here it's a proper friend system like on any other and you can choose whether to accept or deny requests.

Community wise I'd say they're equal. There are nice people and nasty people just like anywhere else. MAL probably has the edge though simply because there are way more active users here.

I use MAL since it's what I started on but I think anilist has a much better UI.
