Well, the show is not yet finished and I have not yet seen Moriarty's true potential in the anime so I can't really choose between the two.

He said "hero with villain mindset". I think Lelouch falls into that category.

I don't Moriarty is as relatable with Light as it is with Lelouch. The ending completely reminded me of Lelouch.

I prefer William. I'd say he's also smarter than Light as he can deduce things. Light cannot. Although, I'd also say Light is worse as he liked innocents as well. William just got rid of bad nobles. (I've finished both the two shows)

Definitely William James Moriarty. For both personality and Intelligence. Light is so egoistical which led him to lose in the end. The fact that Light had an untraceable weapon and made too many blunders. As for James Moriarty, he barely even made mistakes, in fact I don't remember him making a mistake, all of his plans go along as he predicted. And we also seen his though process in ep 1, he can clearly see some very small clues.

Actually I have read the stories and I think Sherlock is better. And I don't think Moriarty is a hero. He hires people to commit crimes. You should read the final adventure and the empty house by sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Then you will get an idea of who truly Moriarty is.

Actually in the stories he has a organisation of crooked guys.
I recommend you to read the final adventure and the empty house by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Actually you have to read only two stories.
The final adventure and the empty house
That way you can save your time and you can understand what was going between Moriarty and Holmes.

Btw if saw that you are planning to watch paprika. My advice is that don't watch it.
I wasted my 90 mins. You should watch The silence of the lambs of Jodie foster.
It's way better.

I think that Light is the smarter and better developed character. We got two seasons of William, but we never fully experienced his mindset like we did with Light. To me, Light appears as the most realistic individual, as any human who has control over death (and associates with gods) would most likely spiral and make irrational decisions.

While it is clear that William is highly intellectual, none of his thought process was in-depth like Light's. In Death Note, we get the full on experience of the time, actions, and millions of theories it takes for Light to implement a plan, or to even make a simple choice.

The crucial difference between the two is that Light had a god complex and was overcame by his emotions, whereas William wanted a better life for the underclass and to be the one to bear the burden of the necessary crimes for his goal to be obtained. Looking at this, William has the better morals, but overall, Light is the most realistic. So if I had to say one character was better than the other, Light Yagami has my vote.

They may have been very small clues, but anyone who pays close attention could have easily figured it out. William's plans were never as in-depth either. We only saw his power of observation, we never saw his calculations of each and every possibility and strategy like we did with Light— which honestly disappointed me lol. Light was more unpredictable with his methods and intellect.

However, I love both, and don't think the two are very comparable, as they are quite different!

Well, they're just...different. They have their similarities, but the writers weren't really going for the same vibes with these two characters, I feel.

While William is a gentleman at heart, maybe a bit of a sociopath but still shown as sympathetic, Light is a straight-up madman and that is what he was supposed to be. He has a gigantic god complex, is incapable of empathy, and lets go of all of his humanity in his quest for power and worship. He claims it's for a noble cause, but in reality the only cause he really gives two shits about is becoming the god of the new world. Moriarty's portrayal is a little different. The show is way more sympathetic and understanding of his goals, and it's shown that he cares about what he believes in more than he cares about all the power and influence he can get from it. He is, for the most part, sane. The show also spends a lot of time showing that the aristocrats the Moriarty brothers target really DO deserve it – all of them. The people they kill are strictly depraved murderers, rapists, and so on. Death Note also shows assholes getting what they had coming and agrees that the world IS broken and unfair, but also shows Light kill plenty of good, lawful people, which never happens in YNM.

In terms of intelligence, I'd say Death Note goes farther than YNM to establish that the protagonist is a genius and is much more "show, don't tell" about it. It's handled alright in both animes, but Death Note does it a bit better in my opinion. In terms of the overall writing, I'd say Death Note takes the cake as well, but it's honestly no shame to be worse than Death Note. It means nothing, really, like being a worse director than Steven Spielberg. But, if you ask me who the better person is, it's definitely William, by A LOT.
Don't fear the gods,

Don't worry about death;

What is good is easy to get, and

What is terrible is easy to endure.
