Movies trilogy covers the same manga arc that 97 adaptation does. The only difference is that the movies are far worse. Also, you should leave 97 adaptation on hold and read the manga from the beginning since 97 adaptation has way too many cuts, including important characters and it also ends on cliffhanger so you’ll end up looking into manga anyway and you’ll have to start from beginning since anime cuts important characters as i mentioned before.

I’d higky recommend it event if you’ve seen the 1997 as I think it’s just as good. Also I has a better ending then the 1997 anime but I won’t go into that for obvious reasons.
