So, this project was halted for a few years now. Do we at all have any news on what's going on with this? did they fully give up on it?

the movie will never see the light of day, it was canceled, what was made will forever remain on a shelf somewhere

where was it confirmed that it's canceled? While Kon was still alive they said they'll figure something out (knowing of his cancer). Though what happened down the line is the question

the producer, I think it was maruyama said he doesn't want to make the movie because he doesn't know how to end it, only kon knew about it, it was his project, the others left him alone for maximum creativity

It got cancelled, but I read somewhere that they're planning to show the finished part in an event or something.
Might show some cuts kon already completed.

Yeah, unfortunately we'll most likely never see this film. I would love to live in the alternate universe where Kon didn't die and the film was released.

Masao Maruyama, the producer wanted to complete the film, but he needs another director to complete the film. The reason why he doesn't want to do this because then the anime would be a film of the director and would be less Satoshi Kon aesthetic. I don't know if it's canceled. Maruyama is currently in the process of an anime adaptation of Urasawa Naoki's Pluto.
