I have several reasons about why i love this series and consider this as "one of a kind material", starting with:
1. Characters, this is the best aspect of Attack on Titan. Some characters like Eren, Erwin, Armin, Levi, Grisha with complex backstories isn't really as special as we think. Even minor characters like Marleyan guards or characters who barely got development succeded to stole our heart. What i'm trying to say is, i just feel that i almost can emphatize every single characters on this series except Gross and Zackley because they're just like living humans(i mean it literally).
2. Story, i found it unique because it's just destroying all the cliches. Shounen battle rule, "haha fuck friendship", characters motive is just new atleast for me. I watched other shows that tried to do this but most of them failed to delivers.
3. Conflict on this story is just fucking dramatic, some of them were literally cheap conflicts but even with the fact that is cheap, it's not even underwhelming. Reiner and Bertholdt reveal, Eren-Reiss family conflict, Eren-Reiner, and upcoming
ideology conflict
etc.
And brilliantly, it's connected very well. It's fullfilled my own standard of enjoyment which none other anime does. Death Note is maybe the only one that close based on my point but other than that i dont find anything special eventhough they're great.
I like the manga for the setting, characters and plot. I didn't expect most story developments and watching the whole thing unfold has been awesome.
The anime added cool fights and an awesome soundtrack on top of that.
Also as the führer of my local neo nazi association the eldian struggles speak to my soul.

Not gonna lie ,This story is just so random so convoluted,so damn mind bending ,and the plot twists,😵,Awesome ,character development in AOT is the best definition of character development ,give screen time for action in s1,mystery in s2,political spice in s3 ,S4 character development in all these scenarios ,just sit back keep your mind open , focused try to solve the mysteries by yourself ,etc
All these are elements of Attack Titan

Thats a great question.
For me, AoT is the best Anime more like the best piece of story I have ever seen, so far.
But let me explain.
I watched AoT im 2018. It was december and I became ill. So I wasn't in school. To this point, I wasnt a weeb or something. I watched Death Note, Overlord and One Punchman, to this point. Them I decided to watch another series and then, on Netflix, I saw AoT. I knew almost nothing about this Anime. I just knew: there are giants who killing people. So I thought it would be lile the walking dead or something.
Ouh was I wrong. xD
The first few episodes Overwhelmed me completly. I began to watch season 1 at 6 pm... the complete season one.
I loved the Setting, it was so horrific, so creepy and sooo god damn exiting. I cant stop watching.
To explain, I am a huge fan of mystery/thriller stuff. Give me a good plot twist and I will love it. And AoT has a ton of fucking amazing Plot twists.
The storytelling at its self is also just amazing. I love storys, which are like a puzzle. A puzzle which make you see the whole picture just at the end. And AoT makes this (imo) perfect.
After watching it for the second time, you can feel the passion Isayama puts in his work, in nearly every scene. Nothing is filler.
For me AoT is the most thoughtout story I have ever seen.
After I watched the second Season I knew, it will become better and better. The mystery got bigger and bigger, and I got even more exited about the reveal. And then, last year, the basement was opened.
I have never seen a Plot twist like this. A plot twist, that changed everthing. This twist is the definitiom of Mindblow. xD
But not only the story of AoT is just amazing. The characters too. I know, many people think the Chars are pretty one dimensional in season one, and I can respect that. But I think, the characters are good since season 1. They acting lime humans. They aren't the typical shounen good guys. Eren is the anger, about his lost, Mikasa don't want to lose her family again. And armin is the fear. Those are normal human reactions. Thats because the story became so "realistic" for me. I never was this scared like in watching AoT. The first time Eren and the others go behind the wall, it was the scariest thing I have ever seen in a series.
Yeah, and know, Eren is one of the best characters I have ever seen. His developement is just amazing.
The story and the characters are the most important things for me. And in every point AoT, is the best, imo.
But also things that I just love about AoT:
The music, the atmosphere, every single plot twist, the setting, the worldbuilding, the dramatic of the story, its a unique story. Yes I just love everything about AoT.
There are few little things, which can be better. But other are this amazing, that the "problem" dont interests me.
For me, AoT is just a Masterpiece, which gets better and better. And I freaking love it. xD

Thanks for reading ^^
Honestly, i cant find any anime world that more horrific as in AoT world. This is actually first reason why i'm interested in AoT. Before knowing that Titans are flesh mecha, i'm seriously having a nightmare about living as the Survey Corps. Because, damn, colossal titan...
That's reminds me an old theory that Colossal, Female, Armored, and Beast Titan are their real form and their human form is nothing but a disguise. But guess what? I was wrong. I'm not gonna forget that a lot of peoples think that Zeke(in S2) is Grisha because his glasses and the fact that his death were never shown before. But guess what? We're wrong again.
That's why i loved it, Isayama made this story seems "easy to predict" but in the end it's wrong on so many level. Funny thing this hasnt ended yet, there's a lot of plot twist material still unrevealed. Cant wait to see their reaction lol.
* I love big moments and revelation, and shingeki has a lot of them.
* The larger-than-life, biblical feel is what I look for in a story, and shingeki is probably the greatest example of that.
* Sawano's music is amazing and suits the larger-than-life theme perfectly.
* The tragedy the characters live in the past and present make episodes like Midnight Sun much more impactful.
* The plot and world building is very well thought out, with very few inconsistencies that I know of, and everything that happens has a meaning behind since the very episode 1.
Okeanix said: Attack on Titan was great until finale manga arc. Everything goes downhill from there.
I'm agree to disagree. Final Arc is indeed less tense than previous arcs. We're literally getting an endless hype for 3 arcs nonstop but it goes pretty chill afterwards even
it's about the end of the world
But Final Arc is a most philosophy-related arc among the others, with Marley-WfP as the second. If we're talking about Final Arc alone, it's actually great as previous arcs but in overall to be compare is trully as you said, atleast for some peoples.
There are too many character based stories that having AOT being a plot based one is such fresh air, and also keeps the momentun going without overfocusing on characters.
Yeah I prefer plot over characters, I know I am in the minority.

I’ve always wondered, why does everyone go on about the story so much? I know that there’s a lot of twists, but there’s also a lot of predictable stuff, so I’m curious what it is that people love about the story?

I believe the cheapness, awkwardness, and "predictable stuff" are the main charms of this story. That's why there's a lot of people thinks this story actually simple but at the same time it is not.
What drew me in was the fight for survival and the mystery behind the titans. The story became more engaging with plenty of emotional moments, twists and reveals. It was exciting and you could never tell what would happen next for sure. A lot was just too outside the box compared to other series. The visual quality and insane action animation along with outstanding soundtrack to match helped getting hooked and boosted the enjoyment.
Sadly it was kinda bothersome to stay invested with monthly releases of the manga chapters, but whenever a new season came around my hype was revived.
One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron
Just look at lobov, that guy gabi killed to get to the bimp. Lobov in all the 4 seasons had less than 5 min screen time however he had an insane character development off screen. That guy was a high ranking commander in the Garrison which decided to join the corps after S3part2 to be in the front lines even though the mortality of the corps back then was insane, he was already old and he would loose his position by starting all over again.
That guy stayed behind to protect the airship in its retreat all by himself since he wanted to show everyone that even if he is old he is still useful. It was clearly a mistake but I can't really blame him for it. Sadly since he was in the Garrison he didn't have any experience in the front lines figthing other humans that is why he hesitated to shoot gaby and was killed.
I just found how much deep this caracter was for a guy which basically was fodder. This fodder character had more character development than most secondary character from all the shounen and seinen animes I saw which is amazing by looking how little screen time he had.
Story. Easily the story. The way things that were put out in plain view from the very beginning and slowly get revealed throughout the story without the reader realizing is just amazing.
1. It hasn't been dragged out artificially like a lot of mangas do.
2. It doesn't have people resurrecting. It is true that some characters should have died in some situation, but I rather have the later.
3. It was clearly planned for the get go. At least to some extent. And, if it wasn't planned, it is obvious Isayama has read every single chapter he published a million times, because I have to yet find a plot hole.
4- The plot twist and, above all, that feeling of "I need to watch one episode more. One more and I'll go to sleep. Just one more" which is something that I have only felt with Buffy Vampire Slayer and Lost.

Rip lobov.
Couldnt agree more lol, you summarized his background perfectly.
