Complex motivations are not necessary to make a good villain

I have seen a lot of people here shit on some villains because their motivations are to simplistic or can not make them sympathize with the audience.

Don't get me wrong, I like villains with complex motivations such as Johan Liebert and Shogo Makishima, but I don't think complexity necessarily makes a villain good.

Sometimes villains like Yoshikage Kira which have simple motivations for their evil actions are really good and even better than complex villains, if done properly ofc.

How do you like your villains in shows?

There is a fine line between having simple motivations and being a one-dimensional, one-note villain.

I generally just like villains to be entertaining and interesting characters.

Agreed, not every villain needs to raise any complex moral dilemmas, sometimes they can be just shitty people.
What matters the most is just to make them interesting in other ways so they don't feel like one dimensional characters.

I usually like when I villain has a bit of mystery.

I don't really care about their motives (exepct, you know, when they are complete bullshit)

Eh Kira is definitely one of the most mature(as a person) antagonists i've seen , he's very realistic as a centrist to me and ideals are not anything over the top , so yeah definitely.
Another great example would be hisoka morrow.

I like it when they are interesting and not some boring, pasted characters who only serve as a 'wall' in the protagonist's hero journey.

Grounded villains are my personal forte when it comes to anime. I've already been tainted with cliched 'sitcom' antagonists in the past.

I mean if you consider Gilgamesh a villain then hes a prime example of a villain that doesn't need to be complex. Hes pretty basic but me, along with a lot of other people love his character.
I gave up on character of the week since it takes too much thinking. I'll just change my forum pfp to whoever I want every week lol.

I mostly dont like evil for the sake of evil villains but its unavoidable.

I do dislike the side villains that happen in a lot of anime. Stuff like rapey bad guys in SAO had. Or the "Are you alone? Come with us baby" bad guys that appear in romance anime so the protagonist has a way to show hes strong and can protect who ever.

I prefer heroes and villains that are more middle ground anti-heroes.

It doesn't need to be complex.
I don't ask for complexity, but I do ask for creativity.

As long as they are entertaining/engaging, I don't care if they're simplistic. Complexity =/= quality.

Even though All for one is so generic it has a scary atmosphere which makes him a great villain of Mha imo.
I like villains that makes me sympathize them tbh like Isabella,Shigaraki, etc.
All I'm asking is that Villains need to be memorable. That's it.
Oh and I want more villains that makes me hate them like

When it comes to characters I can just call villains, I probably only really like Bondrewd from Made in Abyss, and even that is pretty damn complex after the movie developed it further.

I like Benten from Uchoten Kazoku. I wouldn't call her a villain. Maybe she ate somebody, big deal. But calling her a villain feels like I'm selling the character short.

If by simple we mean just an ugly man in a shounen to beat, or a lady with a wide smile and big tits for the protagonist to impale on a stick, then yeah, not into that. They generally talk too much, when you can't bring yourself to care, knowing full well they'll be turned into mince.

I don't mind any motivations, whether if it's simple or not but no motivations such as shigaraki (before not now) really pisses me off.

just wanna feel wanted by someone other than the police 😫

Agreed. There is more to a villain than complexity. I enjoy complex villains/ani-heroes/morally grey characters a lot, but I don't think that's the only thing that makes a villain good.

Sephiroth from FF7 is a somewhat shallow character, but his cool design, impactful scenes, and how masterfully the story built up to him through foreshadowing made him memorable.

Edit: and I love Bowser. Sue me.

Agreed there is nothing wrong with an evil for the sake of being evil villain. I have noticed a lot of shounen anime specifically rely way to heavily on sympathetic villains and it is really annoying. I would rather have 100 villains like Frieza or Dio than any of the generic demons in Demon Slayer that had a sad sappy drawn out backstory for sake of having a backstory.

Kira from JoJo is one of the best villains out there.

All he wants is living a normal life, but he's a serial killer. Simply genius.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

As long as they're not Sexual Assault Online level of villains, I'm fine with them.

The thing is with this is that this is where I would say.

"Ok good opinion. no one cares"

Because using words, you can make anything sound better than it should be. Obviously, if you do this for every type of villain, there will be no "bad" kind of villain. Which isn't something that would make sense given different opinions exist.

Basically. Good opinion. Nothing else really.

Generally, we prefer characters that are acting in a manner that we would expect real people to act had they been put into that situation with similar background. That's what makes anticipating how they'll move forward within the plot engaging to us. If they were acting so erratically and whimsically to the point where they don't resemble a human being with interests, that doesn't make for a riveting story. This obviously calls for motivations, and since most people aren't vile, if you're to write a vile character, you need to account for this with a particularly strong motivation. It doesn't necessarily have to be complex, and neither do they have to be morally grey, but they should express that motivation in a believable way. Not "I just wanna kill everyone muhahaha!"

PS. You can make a character that is not bound by reason or logic, but it's not gonna be a strong point of your show.

I agree to a certain extent but as long as the villains goals are somewhat realistic that’s fine with me.

That's how opinions are, you don't have to agree with it. I just shared my thoughts and wanted to see if other had the same opinion about it. No need to look to deep into it. Also when I was talking about complex motivations I was not talking about characterization.

Not anime but who gives a fuck, It from Stephen King's It is really good villain, only thing she wants to do is to eat and live to give birth and you only see a glimpse of her mind in the novel. That mf clown in the sewer is iconic regardless if you've watched the mini-series, movie or read the book. There's no other motivation given but her want to survive and that's all we need to know that that demigod is evil and to root for The losers' club.

Back to anime I really liked in the ygo vrains Lightning because only reason why he is the bad guy is 'cuz he's salty. Best written villain in ygo tbh other villains carried some weird melodrama around them.

The only thing I can think of is the antagonist from the film Made in Abyss, his motivation seemed silly compared to everything he did in the film, it was terrifying and cruel.

Another example I can think of outside of anime are Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI) and The Joker (Batman Comics), just look at them, they don't have a specific goal, they just want to watch the world burn.
