One more thing, the moments which you keep talking about, Emilia and Subaru are going to have a ton in the future. Episode-2 of Cour-2 is going to destroy entirety of your hopes as the moment he has with her here, he won't even will have with rem. Moreover, we have the finale of Cour-2 which solidifies their relationship even more so yeah.....

Now, past the waifu war, I don't think Rem would make for a great heroine at all.

She has no place for character development, at all:
- Her past is already known and is fairly simple;
- Following the last point, her only goals are to be with Subaru and destroy the Witch Cult;
- She's already brave and all, she wouldn't benefit from mental development;
- In terms of power, she has no place for improvement, she swings her morning star and can do a bit of magic, but as Rem she won't get to drastically improve her physical abilities and her magic abilities are pretty already at their limit. Giving her a bullshit new power would be bullshit.
- Her relationship with Subaru has close to no place for development. If Emilia didn't exist, she'd simply be with Subaru already, period, nothing to add. Since Emilia isn't there, she's number two, period, nothing to add. Romantically, her relationship with Subaru is pretty much already at its climax.

Rem's view toward Subaru evolved too quickly in arcs II and III and now she needed to go for Subaru and Emilia to get proper development. She played a crucial role - don't get me wrong - but she would not do much good as an heroine. She'd help Subaru and it'd stop there.

Comparing Emilia to Rem (as potential heroines), Emilia has:
- An intriguing past and origins. She's an half elf with apparently quite the harsh past, I wonder where that will go;
- She must have a relationship with Satella in a way or another, I wonder where that will go;
- Puck is pretty intriguing himself and is gone for now, I wonder where that will go;
- Ambitious goals. Become 'king' and stop racial discrimination, she also wishes to be accepted by others herself;
- She has room to become more powerful. Following the events of Frozen Bonds, we can only wonder if she's get to control her powers someday;
- Her relationship with Subaru is yet uncertain. She doesn't really understand Subaru's love and she has yet to fall for him.
- She has tons of room for mental development.
- But most importantly, she's flawed. Not only does that strenghens the point above, it also means she, like Subaru, has a lack of self confidence and they can develop together in a very meaningful way.

"A boy without self confidence, letting his feelings known to a girl without self confidence. This is just a story to try his best for a purpose like that. That's all this story is about."
- End of arc III (novels), also the direct source of season 1's last episode's name.

(not spoiling the rest of season 2 in the list above was hard hehe)

All in all, I think Emilia is a much better written character and a better heroine because she has so much place for development, compared to Rem's character that is pretty much set in stone by the end of arc III. Letting the fact that Re:Zero's story wouldn't make sense at all if it wasn't for Emilia on the side, I wouldn't like the story nearly as much if it was to follow the adventures of Subaru and Rem crushing Sin Archbishops every season simply because that's their end goal and see no character development whatsoever since their relationship is at their climax already and Rem gets Subaru out of trouble everytime.

Despite my preference for Emilia, I get why people would prefer Rem in a waifu war. However, outside of that, Rem would be a much lesser heroine, based on my personal analysis of the show.
