I will say, off the bat, that the trains suck. Yes they're on time, but they feel like the whole population get on the train at once.

It's like Japan needs more trains. I've been to Tokyo for vacation before and it was really packed during the off/going home hours. Also during the starting time. I took the time to wait for another train.

What do you think about the people themselves by your observation?

In the Kanto area, it feels very judgmental. But I recently went to Aomori, and there it feels like curiosity; mainly because no one visits there.

Pretty good prices.

On average about 700 - 1000 yen per ramen bowl depending on where you look.

I would advise wherever you go, just wander the streets until you you find somewhere that catches your eye, but always have a few places in your mind.

Aomori is the furthest prefecture on the main Honshu island, which includes Tokyo, there are several islands included within Japan. But my point is that within Tokyo you get a different kinds of staring compared to the rural parts of Japan, such as Aomori.

I have a few questions:

- Is it easy to make friends?
- Is the Japanese lifestyle really as convenient as people say? e.g. vending machines and quick meals.
- What do you do to watch anime? (I've heard you don't get a lot of legal streaming sites there and TV anime you have to wait up till late hours to view them).

In terms of anime, use Netflix....and learn Japanese. Quite a lot of anime don't have subtitles.
If you want quick and easy meals, 7/11, and all the convenience stores don't disappoint.
Depending on where you go, people are friendly. For the most part the Japanese are friendly, but if you if you learn a little bit of Nihongo they will be even more friendly.

Forgot to say that people stand in front of the door where people are supposed to get off thus blocking others all the time.

Oh, OK. Tokyo is filled with foreigners and it's a big metropolitan city so I guess being judgemental happens. Especially after Logan stuff. Must be fun being in Aomori for them being curious on you.

Not really.

They just seem to get off 500 stops from you, and 5,000 people get on 1 carriage.

Beautiful, but they love to tease... so get your A-game on, bud. Unless you to go the middle of nowhere, where they'll be happy to have a foreigner...provided you are respectful (don't mention anime), and to willing accept whatever they throw at you...

Yes, I've tried a few nightclubs in Shibuya.

Good luck getting in for free.

To be honest they're okay, better off going to karaoke with a few friends.

Most Japanese people don't care if you're gay or straight.

In my experience, I haven't seen it brought up. Not the best person to ask, but whatever your orientation you shouldn't worry.

Is it true that couples don't "show love" (kissing, hugging, hand holding, ect.) in public? I've heard that its considered rude 2 do that.

Also, I've heard that when they look at TV shows, play vidya, watch sports, ect. They don't scream with excitement or laugh out loud because its also considered rude.

I can't really say about the other stuff, but no they don't to show tend to show "affection" in public. A simple bow suffices, and then they go on their merry way....

So its possible to live in Japan, with basic knowledge of Japanese? i've always wanted to visit Japan for as long as I can remember tbh, and live there actually which is definitely a more recent feeling in past few years, fed up of the UK, life too actually need a change and i'm seriously considering to do it, but of course a huge decision like that, don't wanna jump in half cocked ya know?

i remember there was a program that showed immigrants from India or Indonesia with literal zero knowledge in the language. they relied 100% on google translate and google maps.
they seemed to be able to live without much issues, surprisingly. of course, it helps to know the language at least a little.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Yeah, you'll do fine; as long as you are somewhat respectful of Japanese culture. You should be okay.

Do you know anyone there teaching english in Japan? I've been thinking for it for a long time, but idk if I want to commit.... I heard the work-life balance there sucks ass. Also I'm not white.... and I heard there's a decent amount of racism particularly towards dark-skinned people.

Yeah, know some of the language whenever you come over. It's pretty helpful, for the small things at least.

You don't need to be fluent whenever you come over. 99% of Japanese people presume that you are a foreigner, and that you don't know any Japanese.

I teach English!!!! And yes it does suck ass.

In terms of dark-skinned people, no one really cares too much.

About as much as any foreigner. You'll get the same stare as any foreigner, dark-skinned or not.

Hopefully yes I do!! But I'm also a qualified programmer (qualified in massive air quotes), so if I wanted I could change profession - which I don't want to.

I do like teaching, but not all the other crap I have to deal with (mountains of pointless admin etc.). If you want to teach in Japan look around at the different companies that'll bring you over.

Apart from English teaching I don't think there are many jobs, if any, that'll let you come over here without Japanese. Mainly because with English teaching your job is to teach English, and so they don't really care if you speak Japanese or not. Maybe Google around if there is other jobs where you don't need Japanese.

If you want to be a cheapskate, like me sometimes, you can get by on under 2000 yen (around $20) in a week for food. But if you are coming over with your family I'd say bring a couple thousand of your currency, so you can come over and experience everything that you want to.

And I'm sure that they wouldn't want to eat fried rice from Lawson everyday of their trip as well.

In terms of staying somewhere there are plenty of cheap hotels around the country so you shouldn't worry too much, provided that you book it well in advance.
