Not much else to add, just wanted to get different culture vibes and see how they look through a Japanese filter - in particular Italy.

Some I've seen in Europe: Gosick, Spice & Wolf, Berserk, Vinland Saga, Fullmetal Alchemist 2003, Drops of God, Monster

Emma: A Victorian Romance takes place in 20th century England. And this thread seems to have some good suggestions as well, such as Aria: The Animation taking place in Venice.

Gunslinger Girl

you can go with the anime or manga, I'd recomend the manga because the second season of the anime goes off course (and the pacing felt better reading it for me)

I am still a little annoyed that I could not find this one in Italian dub.

best in fullscreen and loud:
*darn, using my right hand is off-limits for a while. Typing with my left hand only is ... eww.*

You should also probably check out The World Masterpiece Theater, which is a project with the intent of adapting classic literature from all around the world into a series of television series. Many of these are based on European literature, such as Heidi: Girl of the alps by Swiss Johanna Spyri or Heart (Coure) by Italian Edmondo De Amicis. It also includes Moomin, which is based on Finnish Tove Jansson's books and Andersen Monogatari, which adapts many of Danish H.C. Andersen's works.

It's old but it's definitely worth checking out, especially since Studio Ghibli founders and legends Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata were involved.

I'm amazed no one yet mentioned Ristorante Paradiso. The entire story takes place in Italy.

Ikoku Meiro no Croisee takes place in 19th century Paris. Junketsu no Maria is also set in France, but during the fifteenth century.
