Ergo Proxy. Gothic touch, post apocaliptyc ending and theme and a very psychological plot. The animation is just fantastic.

yea, I forgot about that one. Very good, and somewhat mindfuck.

However if you have not seen Evangelion yet...you must!!! try the Rebuild 1.0 movie first.

Alright, it was on my to-watch list anyway.

Also, to expand, I'm thinking of something that shows society as being destroyed, and not rebuilt yet, if you get what I mean.

try this too.

http://myanimelist.net/anime/1140/Giniro_no_Kami_no_Agito

It's a movie.

Additionally in the second half parts of Ergo Proxy, most of it takes place in the ruined cities and uninhabited places.

isn't desert punk more of a comedy? It has the kind of premise I want, but it looks more like a funny action type thing.

true, that's what I kinda did not like about it too, too comedic like even in times when it needed to be serious.

IMO It got serious when it needed to be, most of the comedy was in the first 12 or so episodes, it took a more serious turn later on.

For the first request, you might want to have a look at Angel's Egg. It does not have any action, but it meets the other criteria nicely.

For the second request I am not quite what you mean, but you might want to have a look at the following anime:
Legend of the Galactic Heroes- Has civil wars and corrupt governments
Kaiba - Shows a society divided betwwen the rich and the poor.
Kino's Journey - Shows some countries on the brink of collapse.

You might also want to look at Pale Cocoon, which doesn't really meet either requirement, but might have the feel you are looking for.

Sins fits your description fairly well. It has some nice action animation and the dialogue's sparse but interesting.

You could also consider Blue Gender and Tekkaman Blade: both about people attempting to survive in the aftermath of an alien invasion that destroyed normal society. Bit of a health warning on those, though, as both could've benefited from a higher budget.

You must read blame!. Very little conversations, post apocalyptic, huge megastructures of previous civiliztions and lots of action. The art is also amazing.

You should also check out:

Ergo Proxy
Now and Then, Here and There
Pale Cocoon

For the second request I guess you can check out:
Akira
Gantz (manga, anime is mostly crap)
Metropolis
Hotel (a bit overrated one shot but worth reading)

And finally "Eden It's an endless world". The world there gets crushed by a strange plauge, twice!

Edit: Oh and don't watch Desert Punk. While it is post apocalyptic and the setting really is promising the anime is sadly just another shounen with pervert jokes crap.

Maybe you want to check out Kurozuka. It's a decent anime that can be pretty confusing at times, but I think it matches your description.
