How long was it since we had an ongoing yuri/shoujo ai anime?

I know the answer to this one since I looked very carefully into the history of Yuri
anime series. There is a Wikipedia page which lists them all very systematically.
Here it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_%28genre%29

Anyways, there have been no Yuri anime series "with Yuri as a central element"
since Sasameki Koto (2009) and Aoi Hana (2009). Sadly, both of these basically
crashed and burned. Have a look at a few episodes of each just in case you
think I might be mistaken. After that, my impression is that nobody wanted to
take the risk of producing another primarily-Yuri series.

There was, of course, Yuru Yuri. But Yuru Yuri is considered by experts to have
"Yuri as a secondary element". In the case of Yuru Yuri, the Yuri element was
played for laughs. There was no actual Yuri love story. Likewise, a number of
recent Cute Girls Doing Cute Things series have had Yuri elements which are not
extensive. Have a look at A-Channel, Yuyushiki, Kitakubu, Tesabu and of course
Non Non Biyori. In particularly, I think that Non Non Biyori has been testing the
waters without going all-in.

So, for those of you serious Yuri fans who have been holding your breath for
the past four years, you are just going to have to wait until January 9th. On
the other hand, I am not 100% certain about what we are going to see. From
what I know, it could go either way.

There is no question in my mind that the best anime series of the Yuri genre is
Maria-sama ga Miteru (2004). But not everybody will like it, since there are not
even kissing scenes.

Kanamemo was never yuri to begin with and the yuri in it was never the main focus of the "story", along with those two who were a couple.

Have you watched Simoun? I can't say it's better than Marimite since I am still on its second season, but it is really good.

Hi Mizusi. Thanks. Okay, I think that you've got me on "Kanamemo". I am quite
familiar with the series and I certainly do remember how much of it was Yuri. I
really don't understand why it is listed on that Wikipedia page as having Yuri
"as a central element". There is definitely Yuri, but it is a secondary part of
the overall story. So I think I'll edit my above comment accordingly since that
is clearly a mistake. Thanks for catching it.

Regarding "Simoun", I have not watched it. I do clearly recall reading the
description but I basically dismissed it due to the far-out premise. But since
you mention it, I'll certainly give it an episode or two of a chance to hook my
interest.

To pique your interest in "Marimite", here is the beautiful trailer to the live-
action movie, accompanied by an English song that is not in the movie:

I strongly recommend all four seasons of the anime, the manga and the
light novel. It is quite difficult to "get into" at the very start, but it is very
worthwhile after you figure out what is going on.

Hello.

I liked Marimite's first season a lot, only 4 episodes in the 2nd season right now and I'm enjoying it even more, especially since my favorite character (Sei) keeps appearing and teasing Yumi. Though it'll probably not last much time since Sacchiko and Yumi are the main characters.

And yeah, at first I found it kind of dull, but when I watched the episode about Sei's past, it just grew on me instantly. I'm pretty confident I'll love all the seasons, but I don't think it is any better than Aoi Hana or Onii-sama e... (Marimite is strongly influenced by it too)

Hi again Mizusi. Okay, if you've gotten into the 2nd season of Marimite (2004)
then you'll definitely enjoy the rest of the series. Indeed, like you were saying,

was great. And I also love the times when

To me Maria-sama ga Miteru seemed amazingly impenetrable for the first episode.
After that it become less mysterious and livens up. It excites me to see two girls

I have never been able to get more than two episodes into Aoi Hana ( 2009 /
青い花 ), despite several attempts. Perhaps I have been giving up too easily. If
you say that it is in the same league as Marimite then I'll definitely try once more.
I do know that I often quickly give up on series but then love them later.

As it turns out, I only just started to watch "Onii-sama e" ( 1991 / おにいさまへ ).
At the moment, I am about eight episodes in. I was very curious to see why it got
banned in France. It is absolutely fantastic, and certainly compelling, accessible and
memorable. It is definitely worth a careful reading of that wikipedia article on the
Yuri genre ( here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_%28genre ) since they do
specifically mention "Onii-sama e" and put it into the context of the history of Yuri.

So I guess I should finish all 39 episodes of "Onii-sama e" and then make my own
overall comparison with Marimite. After 8 episodes, I can confidently say that the
two series are ... different.

Let's all hope that "Sakura Trick" will make it to 39 episodes as well!

Stopped reading the first paragraph at "Sei's kindergarten fight" because I don't want to get spoiled, no offense. I'm looking forward to watch the whole thing, though.

You're giving up way too easily on Aoi Hana, 2 episodes don't cover pretty much anything. I don't think it is anything like Marimite, Aoi Hana tends to depend more on drama/angst and that's what makes people find it boring and unappealing.

Onii-sama e... has A LOT of polemic subjects going on, a LOT. Getting banned for those matters is a bit silly, but it's at least understandable. You'll get there when you continue watching, prepare for more drama and character development.

Sakura Trick will only have about 12 episodes and it's far from being like Marimite, Simoun, Aoi Hana or Onii-sama e. Sakura Trick is literally the most pandering show to easy yuri fans, it's a show that you'll have to turn your brain off to enjoy, or so I think. Good Yuri just doesn't sell, therefore they're approaching the genre in a way the viewer will find it cute and simple.

Woops! Sorry! I should have put those plot details about Maria-sama ga Miteru
inside "spoiler" tags. There is a rule that we are supposed to do that. I just fixed it.

Okay, I'll try watching Episode 3 of Aoi Hana (a.k.a. Sweet Blue Flowers) and see if
I get drawn into it. For me, I might take multiple attempts.

I share your expectation about what we can hope to see in Sakura Trick. If I can
see basic all-around production values then I will be satisfied. Anything above
and beyond that will be an unexpected bonus.

On a side note, I think that the Yuri subplot in Non Non Biyori is very well done.
It depicts genuine human emotions and seems realistic to me. It is the best Yuri
that I have seen in a long time. It doesn't come across as being exploitive or
voyeuristic. However, it is only a small percentage of the entire series, so Yuri
fans won't want to watch the entire series just in order to catch those few key
scenes.

I'm loving NNB more than I thought I would, but I really can't stand Hotarun and Koma, this coming from a yurifan. Candy Store, Koma's genki imouto and their onii-chan, and Renge-chon are the ones who make me laugh the most. It is selling pretty well too, so hopes up for a second season.

It's funny how subtext sells.

In defense of Des, it took me quite a lot of searching on websites until I was able
to find a primary source of information about the actual length of the episodes.
What I found out is that they are scheduled for a 30-minute time slot. You can
see the information on this webpage, just below where it says "放送局".
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%A1%9CTrick
What it says there is that, in the Kantou region (関東広域圏) the episodes will be
broadcasted on TBS, starting on January 9th (2014年1月9日), every Thursday
(木曜) from 1:58 am to 2:28 am (25:58 - 26:28). Kantou is basically Tokyo.
On the English version of the Wikipedia page, the episode length is not specified.
Even on their official website, which gives the broadcast days and times for every
TV channel in Japan, they don't actually mention the episode length:
http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/sakura/onair/

In case, this is of interest, a few hours ago they tweeted this photo of one of the
voice actresses. It is pretty likely that this was taken at Comiket. Today (Dec 31)
is the last day of the three-day twice-yearly event there in Tokyo.

She is Yurika Endō (遠藤ゆりか). She is the voice actress for Rina Sakai (坂井理奈).
Rina is the Vice-President of the Student Council.

Here, these two girls look bored and impatient waiting for January 9th:

The tall girl with the long blonde hair on the left is Kotone.
The girl on the right with her twin tails in red ribbons is Shizuku.
In the story we will find out that . . .
