Moderately oldschool anime

I'm looking for series or movies that are oldschool, but not REALLY oldschool (like Lupin). I find the art style from the late 80s to the mid-90s to be the most strangely appealing and unique. 2000s and beyond is a little too new for me, while 70s to early 80s is a little too old for me. I'm looking for good stuff I've missed between those two timeframes.

Example: Slayers, Eva, Tenchi Muyo, YYH, etc. Probably the most abundant period there is, right? But I'm sure there's more I should see.

Genre doesn't really matter, but I'm more in the mood for lighthearted comedy stuff recently if that helps. Obscure or mainstream, I don't care as long as it's great.

All of these are fairly light hearted, though they also have drama (usually towards the end)

First thing that came in mind was Great Teacher Onizuka. Turns out it aired from 1999 till 2000 so it might not be the style you're looking for, though.

Do you mean Uchuu Senkan Yamato rather than Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199?

The latter was started in 2012. Also, the former is way too old school for the requestor ..

Not all of the following are great, but all are definitely good, light-hearted, and moderately old school:

Those who hunt Elves (season 2 is horrible though, don't waste your time on it)
Lost Universe (be warned, the second half is less good)
Tenshi na konamaiki
Macross 7
Gokinjo monogatari (if your eyes can take it)

and less comedic but still light-hearted to a degree:
