Just from that alone it sounds like he works for a government (or many) and is some kind of investigator or intelligence operative. His self made job description sounds an awful lot like how someone in a special intelligence agency (or even spec-ops, but not in this case) would put their job to make it sound nice/badass while also avoiding directly specifying their job, and the stuff he's looking into and cash he's raking in goes with that.

Her mom does just go to university like you thought.
