What do you think, is this movie still worth watching for someone that hasn't seen even one of the movies or anime?
I haven't watched anything so far, but this movie looks interesting and I have already read some doujinshi of this series, which were pretty good.

So do you think I will understand what's going on or is the knowledge of the first movies and anime necessary to watch it?

Honestly I would recommend watching everything, but if you can't get into the art style/animation of older Eva then you should at least watch the first two Rebuilds before watching Rebuild of Eva 3.33. They're kind of necessary for 3.33 and they're all great movies in their own right.

At least watch 1.11 and 2.22. Just watching 3.33 makes no sense at all. Not to mention that 2.22 is absolutely fantastic.

Absolutely not, you won't have a clue what's going on. Why is everyone in such a hurry to watch anything new?
Just watch in this order: NGE, EOE. 1.11, 2.22, 3.33

Watch the series if you want the Rebuilds to make sense. The Rebuilds aren't remakes.... they are sequels. The original still holds up nicely anyway, so give it a go if you can.

Let's not open up again the can of worms that this theory brings up.

What kind of idiot would watch a SEQUEL without watching the prequel movies first?
Steel Ball Run anime when?

Dude, apparently 3.33's bonus material does indeed state Rebuild is a sequel to the original, despite them not being chronologically sequential.

However, I still stand by my opinion: Rebuild of Evangelion is a movie series that holds very well by itself, and can be enjoyed and understood completely without exposition to the original story.

But yes, you can't watch 3.33 without 1.11 and 2.22.

Might as well, even us the viewers of NGE/EoE/Rebuilds 1.0 & 2.0 are just as lost as Shinji in 3.33, LOL

On a serous note however, I believe you were reading doujins of 2.22, not 3.33 (so I would assume).

However, I highly recommend watching the original TV series, Neon Genesis Evangelion, as then you could enjoy a more 'sophisticated' doujin with 'plot' called NGE: Retake, since you seem like you're into that kind of stuff.

Just this once, I'll fulfill whatever your wish is.

I feel it's much more enjoyable to watch the original TV series first, then End of Evangelion, then rebuild series, because of the theories and shit of it being a sequel just makes things more interesting for me.

Listen to him, Yurireviews. Don't rush things and enjoy the original series; you still got well over a year until 4.44 comes out.

I guess I will take your advice and really start from the beginning, it's just that I don't like the animation of the older Evangelion seasons very much, so I hoped I could at least watch the movies without having to watch the anime as well.

But it seems I was wrong, so thx everyone for the advice :)

You should watch everything in order:
- Neon Genesis Evangelion eps 1 - 24 (without two last episodes)
- End of Evangelion
- Neon Genesis Evangelion eps 25 - 26 (it's kind optional cause it's mindfucking, it extends what happened in the final scenes of EoE)
- all three Rebuild of Evangelion movies

Whole plot is very complicated, many things is referencing each other and returning (like Shinjis walkman and different number of tracks in every movie).

The final two episodes are kind of necessary because they're the climax of Shinji's character development.

Plus it makes you appreciate End of Evangelion so much more. Not saying I disliked episodes 25 & 26, but the movie makes your faith in NGE shine so much more.

Indeed necessary. it's not just about Shinji but also of Asuka and Rei's inner most thoughts. It's an important aspect for the viewer to know about. But I would recommend you just ignore the very last conclusion of episode 26 after watching it. Because after that you'll be watching the movies and they start right where episode 24 left off and how Shinji is at that time. You'll understand once you see it.

1) Watch Evangelion TV series with the directors cut edition from episode 20 (I think) to 24
2) Evangelion Movie Death & Rebirth (Though you don't need to watch the Rebirth part as it's really the first minutes of the next movie.
3) End of Evangelion
4) After your mind f*ck
5) Recover then start on Rebuild movies.
6) Then go search for Evangelion Wiki geeks for stuff you may of missed or newly learn of.

Watch the TV series first, and in this order.

1-20, then the directors cut versions of 21-24, then the original 25 & 26 immediately followed by The End of Evangelion. Death & Rebirth is useless, as the additional content in that is in the directors cut versions of 21 till 24.

Also, the animation for Eva TV is at times really good for it's age, and at point's look better than many modern titles, mostly in character design and mecha design, and the battles have a engaging sense of aura and atmosphere. I'm more a character designer type of guy, so animation quality doesn't really matter to me, it can have very nice animation for all I care, but if the characters designs are bland and boring (Angel Beats or 5CM Per Second), I won't feel engaged, whereas if a series has... imperfect or more than serviceable animation, but lush character designs (Rose of Versailles, GunBuster), then I'm in.
Sure in the later episodes, it does become less consistent due to budget constraints, thus meaning incomplete storyboards (which look pretty cool IMO, as they give of a dreamy, almost Eraserhead feel) aplenty.

However, as End of Eva is a movie, the animation is BEAUTIFUL. The artstyle looks grittier than the TV series and features one of the most meaningful, engaging and most surreal endings I've seen. As an art student, I found the last 45 minutes very alluring.

Then, once it's sunken in, watch the Rebuilds.

You may have a point there Klonoa79H on Death & Rebirth segment. Though I found the first part where all the pilots play their musical piece. I had originally saw that after watching Eva's original TV 1-26 and did not know of Directors Cut for a long time after that till I saw Platinum Edition and learning what it had.

Some minor bad things on the Directors Cut I noticed is that some minor details were taken off from the original TV series 21-24 that made me scratch my head as to why it was removed.

I don't know some individuals sense of being put off by the animation quality. That's something that I don't really get. Perhaps if I think of it as me attempting to watch Astro Boy and not wanting to watch anymore of it as the animation would bother me. I think I might understand their reasoning a little.

EVA fan here.
Before seeing Rebuild, do what I did:
Watch NGE 1-24 (25-26 TV ending can be optional. but should consider seeing once since there is strange parallel setting between this and the next step. This was not the creator's intended end due to the censorship and budget constraints, so he gave this special side behind what was really going on), then 21'-24' (which means newly enhanced cuts. This is needed for the next step:)
then End of Eva. Warning: do not watch this late at night. Do watch this dubbed ('cause it's bad. Same for NGE Dub.)
Death: True^2 is purely optional. Back before the release of End of Eva and the enhanced cuts of 21-24, it was a bit unique. Though it does have an interesting view for a flashback film. Some enhanced animation from episodes in the past are enhanced and is exclusive for this release.
Then watch Eva 1.11, 2.22, then 3.33.
Done until the fourth film.

Personally I think it would be better to invest some time into watching the first/second movies since it really helps your understanding unless you're here just for the BL (which some people are) go ahead! I feel like it's better if you do have a sort of basis to watch it on.

Wait for the fourth movie. This movie IMO was mainly buildup for the fourth, and really can't be seen individually without massive frustration.

Nah, don't have to watch anything, you can just jump into this 3.33. You will be as lost as the other who've been following eva
Just joking, on personal note, I think 3.33 is great and I highly recommend you to see the series + EoE
I think you should really see EoE prior seeing this. And to see EoE, you need to see the original series.

Why would you even ask that?
I can't think of any (good) series that can be properly understood when started from the end.
Maybe except of some games/animes that get prequels.

That's some signature, eh?
