I have started this post to do one thing and one thing only, and that is to make a grand collection of anime which have had real life places used in them.

If you post please include a link which has picture comparisons or include the pics in your post along with the name of the anime and name of the location. Also the more heavy the use of real life location in the anime the better.

I already have found a few from various anime:

5cm per second
the whole anime is based of real life locations.
akari and takaki live around shinjuku in cherry blossoms.
takaki lives on tanegashima island in cosmonaut. the island even has a real JAXA space station and the school in the anime is in real life. This island also features in pokemon ruby and saphire as Mossdeep city, and is the first place americans introduced guns to japan.

Hyouka
Kamiyama City = Hida Takayama, in Gifu prefecture
many places from the town show up in the anime such as the school, cafe where chitanda reveals her uncles disappearance, the riversides, and even the ceremony at the end takes place in the real life town.
library
this town is really well done in the anime, its also cool because it has this snow wall

Clannad & after story
The locations in this anime are scattered all over the place but the main city that the anime takes place in is called Mizuho.
Also the school from Clannad is not in Mizuho it is actually in Shibuya. It's called Kami Yamaguchi JHS.
Kamenoko Children Park is the park where Furukawa bakery is next to.
Tappizaki is where the observation deck is where Tomoya meets his grandmother.
Jinenen is where the field where Tomoya brings Ushio.
The Okizaki household is in Osaka.

Mod Note: another user wishes to post a correction to the location of the Clannad school Here is the proof:
http://mikehattsu.blogspot.com/2015/06/clannad-school-building.html
So the real Clannad school is Junior and Senior High Schools at Komaba‚ University of Tsukuba
here are more photos

Edit posted after thread closed. --rodac, forum moderator

Kiki's delivery service
The main town in the anime is actually based mostly of a small town on Gotland island in Sweden called Visby. however there are also alot of inspiration taken from Stockholm.

Kanon
Kanon is based alot of Osaka.

The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
The city is Nishinomiya and it is between Osaka and Kobe.

Tari Tari
Sakuchu, Enoshima Island.

Initial D
Initial D is based on many mountain tracks in japan, so many that i cannot name them all. however the most famous track to feature in the anime is mt. Haruna

Holybaptiser:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Hinamizawa= Shirakawa-go, which is a very famous city in japan known for being very old and traditional.

ovoon7:
Hanasaku Iroha
Yuwaku Hot Spring is located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, the area that inspired the town seen in Hanasaku Iroha.

yhunata:
Sivler spoon
its called the hokkaido obihiro agricultural high school.

higashi_no_kaze:
Girls und panzers
Ooarai town in Ibaraki prefecture. I especially like this one because of the cakes of course.

Please feel free to post all the real life anime locations that you can.
I will be updating the original list weekly if not daily with who posted each anime real life location first.

Higurashi's Hinamizawa Village was designed after a remote, mountain-side village. I don't feel like taking several screenshots, but all you have to do is watch the after-credits scene of the last episode of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kei to see the comparisons. The anime producers did it themselves for you.

I remembered another one. In episode 10B (second part of episode 10) of Cuticle Tantei Inaba, they referred to a forest well known in Japan for suicides. They even showed it in the episode, considering how the Episode 10B literally took place within it.

Also, the school in Silver Spoon is apparently based on a real school as well.

Oh god I forgot about Aria.

I was in Venezia when I read the manga for the first time. It was the smartest decision I have ever made. The manga depiction of Venice is more realistic and less dreamlike than the anime version, since the anime version is really low budget, there is less detail and the city feels sorta empty in some spots when it shouldn't (but the anime should be watched for the seyuu's and OST alone. Absolutely incredible. Also the Cait Sith moments are amazing.)

My hotel was super lucky, it was only 3 blocks away from the St. Marco square, which is essentially the center piece of the city. I was disappointed to learn that there is not shadow chasing in the square, but there are coffee shops and live musicians throughout the entire square. And the coffee costs way too much money. I remember, a single cup of black coffee was like 9.35 euros. One special blend was like 46 euros.

The secret hangout spot that Aika found in the manga, that was on top of the st marco church, sadly did not exist. The place she was hiding at did, but there was no way of accessing it. That's the thing about Venice though, is you never know. There are actual secret passages and tiny empty alley ways and squares. There's so many cool nooks and cranny's in that city, that you can find so many cool hidden places, without tourists anywhere.

well its not just for simple listing, you can also talk about which anime locations looks best in real life, like i was disappointed with mizuho from clannad :(

i personally like the girls und panzers use of real life locations in the anime.

but if it does just keep as a purely listing thread i will try and move it

Don't worry, I'm all over that ^_~

Air is set entirely in Kami, the Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

Here is a blog post about someone who went there: http://punynari.wordpress.com/2010/08/21/the-1000th-summer-an-air-anime-pilgrimage/

Edit: The person writing the articule refers to is as 'Kasumi' which was merged with Kami and another town in 2005.

Edit 2: http://www.moetron.com/2005/06/19/air-tv-real-life-settings/ A life versus anime shot comparison. There are some very well-matched shots on that page.

Beck does this a lot during their tour of America. And seems to have Shown Their Work.

The series Durarara!! recreates much of the city in which it is set — sometimes disturbingly so. (That vending machine Shizuo uprooted and tossed around in Ep. 3 actually exists.) People have even made montages of the many suspiciously familiar places they've found in the anime.

Kamichu! does this with Onomichi in the Hiroshima prefecture. See here. Of course, everything looks a little newer in the anime—it's set in the period between spring 1983 and spring 1984.

Eden of the East for Washington, D.C.

Sora No Woto's Seize is based off Cuenca, Spain. Fans have even gone there to take photos of locales shown on the anime.

Naoki Urasawa's Monster takes you mostly through the scenery of the former Communist bloc, like Germany and Czechoslovakia, as it tries to unravel the mystery of Johan's creation and his past, though some other settings occur as well, such as Southern France.
You can find his references for some of the streets and buildingshere.

Most iterations of Digimon do this, at least before the places in question get torn apart by kaiju. Some of the best examples are the Fuji TV station in Digimon Adventure and the extensive scouting of Shinjuku's surrounds in Digimon Tamers.
This is more noticeable in Digimon Tamers, because took place mostly in the real world, it contained many Real places. Some examples: Guilmon's hideout◊, Henry's apartment building◊, Takato and Henry's school◊, The street Takato lives◊, and the park Takato, Kazu and Kenta played in◊.

Tentai Senshi Sunred takes place in Kawasaki, Japan, and matches it shot for shot. The art style of Sunred might not be the one usually associated with this trope, but the locations are all too real.

Hinamizawa in Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is based on Shirakawa-Go. Not even the real world is safe now.
There's a possible justification here: The original self-published Visual Novel had backgrounds that were simply Photoshop-filtered photos.
Umineko follows this with at least the Mansion (and probably also the garden) which is based upon a mansion in the Kyū Furukawa Gardens.

Mahou Sensei Negima!:
Mahora obviously has no real world counterpart, but as a whole it's a composite of many real-world places. For instance, the Mahora Bell Tower, pretty much is the bell tower of the Florence Cathedral.
There's also a flashback that takes place in Istanbul (not Constantinople), Turkey, and the background is a very close reproduction of the Istanbul skyline◊. Also note that the only way to tell that this takes place in Istanbul is to recognize the background, because it isn't actually mentioned.

The town of Kamakura, in the Kanagawa prefecture in Japan, is popular as a setting for various anime and manga series, due to its extensive seaside beaches and numerous historic sites with lots of Shrines and Temples. Some notable series taking place there are:

Elfen Lied. Lucy winds up on Yuigahama beach. The stairs of the Gokuraku-ji shrine get a lot of screen time, up to and including the emotional ending. Enoshima island and the Benten bridge leading up to it are used for the ultimate battle in the anime, with lots of screen time for the Enoshima Light House Observatory.

Uta Kata. Most of the attention is on the shrines, parks and temples within Kamakura itself. Enoshima island and its tower form the backdrop of one of the more dramatic episodes. And then there are the two episodes in which the main characters head for Yuigahama beach.

Aoi Hana features Kamakura's local train service, Enoden, since the characters use it to travel around. Enoshima island and the Benten bridge are shown as well, but the show gains bonus points for having a scene in the Iwaya cave. The "Milk Hall", the show's main hangout spot, is a real location and the famous Elfen Lied stairs are also shown, this time in a more romantic setting.

Twin Spica takes a more stylistic approach, although the shorelines and the Yuigahama boulevard where Asumi goes jogging are clearly recognizable.

In Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Alpha takes a trip to Kamakura, with a very prominent view of Enoshima.
Shinryaku! Ika Musume is set on Kamakura's Yuigahama Beach.

A Channel has the obligatory Beach Episode, in which the girls take the very recognizable Enoden train ride to their destination.

Tsuritama is explicitly set at Enoshima.

The events within Tari Tari are also set in Kamakura, particularly around Enoshima.

Mahou Tsukai Ni Taisetsu Na Koto Natsu No Sora takes place against photo-realistic real-life backgrounds. Of special note are Biei in Hokkaido, hometown of the main character Sora, and the hip Tokyo neighborhood of Shimokitazawa. In one episode Sora and Kohta also go on a date in Kamakura.

Amanchu! largely takes place in the town of Ito on the Japanese Izu peninsula, which is known for its abundant hot springs. The big building at the shore where the cast gets together a few times is a well-known local landmark.

Umi Monogatari is set on one of the subtropical Japanese Amami-Oshima islands. It doesn't get any explicit mention though until the DVD special.

Darker than Black is big on this. All three major localities the TV show takes place in, Tokyo, Sapporo and Vladivostok, were painstakingly researched to the point where indeed it was possible to pinpoint the time the references were taken by the state of specific buildings alone.

To the point that it explicitly binds the action to January 2008. The large-scale redevelopment that begun in Summer 2008 in preparation to 2012 APEC summit, has changed the downtown Vladivostok to the extent that it would be impossible to miss, had the action happened any later.
Asobi ni Iku yo!! is set in Okinawa. The credits reveal that the staff worked with the Okinawa tourism board, and does it ever show. There is almost no part of the show that's not showing off the island, its wildlife and its attractions at one point or another.
Tamayura takes place in Takehara, a small seaside town of in the Hiroshima prefecture of Japan, not far from Kamichu!'s Onomichi. The town is rendered with painstaking detail, up to and including touristic signs.

Fractale contains detailed shots of the west of Ireland, and the town in episode 2 is a lot like Galway.
Grave of the Fireflies featured locations that were accurately based on real locations.
Only Yesterday used actual railway stations.

Hanasaku Iroha is set in a town modelled after Yukawa. Comparison pictures can be found here
The girls from Ichigo Mashimaro live in the town of Hamamatsu, in Japan's Shizuoka prefecture. The artist loves to sneak in references, like maps and local landmarks, and sometimes even mentions them by name.

Many of the locations in Yubisaki Milk Tea are real places in Tokyo, often surprising detailed drawn. A collection of pictures of the real places can be seen here.

Yuritetsu is about four girls which form a railway club and naturally goes by real trains to real stations and sights all over Japan. Their local station Yurigasaki-Joshikoumae is a renamed Hino Station on the Chūō Main Line in Tokyo, but the other places goes by their real names, be it the big Ueno Station in Tokyo or the secluded Koboro on Hokkaido. And since one of the girls, Hakutsuru Tsurumi, is a fan of a series which is obvious K-on they are also visiting the above mentioned Toyosato Elementary School, which certainly look like Yui & Co could come in any other minute.

Natsuiro Kiseki takes place in Shimoda, a seaside town on Japan's Izu peninsula. The show is rife with shots of the town's eye-catching surroundings.

Sailor Moon is largely set in the Azabu Juuban district of the Minato ward of Tokyo. There is ever a fan produced book on the topic of how heavily the show draws from the area Warriors of Legend: Reflections of Japan in Sailor Moon.

Joshiraku the second short have the girls visiting various places in Japan while providing some trivia about the location.

3-gatsu no Lion uses places in the Tsukishima Area in the Chuo-ward of Tokyo as a reference for the setting, particularly the Tsukishima and Tsukuda districts. The author even marks the locations she used in the omake.

Girls und Panzer is set in and around the port city of Oarai, including one episode where a battle took place in its streets. In a case of The Red Stapler, it has caused a three-fold increase in tourism to the town.

Robotics;Notes is set in Tanegashima, and later, they went to Odaiba to participate in The Robot Exposition (<-sorry, don't remember the exact title). If I am not mistaken, the characters in Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 were at a similar sort of event in Odaiba.

Tsuritama deserves a lot of credit for bringing up the setting of Enoshima in recognizable and pleasant manner.

Even more, Four Seasons are web-released CMs of different locations in Saitama - with very cute stories attached, and, actually, excellent examples of producing specific, creative, and informative content at once.

also if anyone knows of the place where they go to the beach house in toradora ep.10 that would be so awesome.

PS. anyone who thinks this is a useless thread because too many anime take place in real life i would just like to say that if something is original, no matter how outlandish, obscured, or seemingly impossible it is, everyone should be allowed chase after it.
