I swear I must be alone on this. Everyone says the first half the L vs Light arc
is better but I must disagree. Near vs Mello was my favorite arc. Here's why?

1. Everyone remembers how great Volumes 1,2,3,4 and the first half of 7 were.
But what about volumes 5 and 6. Now maybe others liked it because of the
dramatic irony---but man I can't stand goody two shoes light. Plus Yotsuba
were lame generic villains. It did have good action though and as absurd
and unlikely as it was Light's Xantos Gambit was pretty cool.
Meanwhile the second half of Volume 7 (the beginning of the Near and Mello arc)
starts off with a bang and only gets better after that

2. Sorry but...I'm not much of a Misa fan. So I was glad to see her pushed
aside for a more interesting character: Teru Mikami. That guy is just too
much fun. DELETE DELETE DELETE...LOL.

3. Now I get Light fans hating the second half for obvious reasons
but I was more an L fan and unlike most L fans I didn't think the
manga "sucked" because my favorite character died and his
replacements were "rip offs". Actually I like Near and Mello BETTER
than L. They're such awesome little bastards. If Near and Mello
weren't at each other's necks they would have slaughtered
Light and that's a fact. Watching the machinations of those
two screw over an arrogant s.o.b like Light is quite rewarding.

4. Shit actually happens. We get two kidnappings. An incredibly over the top
death note-on-a-missile. People dying on live tv. Motorcycle chase. Explosions.
And Mikami laughing like a hysterical maniac.

5. the task force actually has half a brain now. Part of the reason L died
is because of the stubborness of Soichirou Yagami. You think L didn't see
through Light's bullshit? No! It was because L isn't a total jerk who would
let Soichirou suffer because he refused to see the truth.
Meanwhile in Part 2, Near and Mello don't give a flying fudgisicle
about what Soichirou thinks and it leads to Kira being brought to justice

6. Light had way too much of an advantage in Part 1:
-He has a killer notebook that he could burn and destroy
all evidence of and never be caught. Of course his career would end
-Everyone trusted him besides L
-Soichirou had his back
-Misa just happened to conveniently love him.
-Rem just happened to conveniently love Misa
-Yotsuba just happened to go "exactly as planned"

Meanwhile in Part 2:

-He has a kidnapping to deal with
-Near is pestering him
-Shidoh screws over Light and if it weren't for Ryuk going out of character
Light would have died THEN. Really if it weren't for plot Ryuk could have
said "sorry man...but you're screwed" and then laugh. I mean what's
Light going to do? Not let Ryuk eat apples? Ryuk does as he pleases.
-Near makes the task force doubt Light
-Mikami "screwing up"
-Mello's determination to win
-etc

Seriously Part 2 things were just going downhill for Light and I loved it

Now I will say the anime screwed up some stuff in Part 2 but most people seem to hate it regardless of the version. But not me. Part 2 is awesome. Go Near!
Who's with me? :)

Part 2 was well done. I don't know why people hate it and why they say it would have been better if it ended after L died. The second half was great, if not, even more enjoyable than the first half.

I preferred the first half... L > Near

L showed respect for Kira whereas Near just insulted him and categorised him with standard murderers which in fact is not the case at all.

That's an interesting comparison, I'll agree on that.

I liked the second half, but I loved the first half. L was just so much better than Near and Mello, his character is actually something we haven't seen before, which is hard to do nowadays. L was also a hell of a lot smarter than Near and Mello, considering the fact that Near and Mello together were just BARELY able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, even though that had so much going for them and L was at such a disadvantage. All in all, L was one of my favorite anime characters (Partly because he seems like a really smart version of my child self) and I was sad to see him go, the show really went from amazing to slightly above average after episode 25. L's death was also extremely well done on the part of the writers, every part of that scene was executed perfectly, and it really added a lot to the emotional aspect of it, especially considering that Light and L had pretty much switched places as protagonist and antagonist, L seeming like the good guy by the time he died.

I have to agree with above.

If that second shinigami would've been the same as Ryuk then Kira would have been caught, L had just planned everything perfectly. On the other hand it was a mistake of Light that caused Near to win (kind of cheap imo), not his genius mind.
After L's death I felt like they were only expanding it so there'd be a "good" ending. If they had shown both Near and Mello somehow in contact with L, like with L visiting the place they were living in, it would have made sense for them to take revenge. Now you just have 2 random kids that somehow manage to both get into pretty powerful positions who want to catch Kira for no real reason at all (competition? really?)

I didn't dislike the 2nd part like many of you. Now if i had to choose one...probably i would still stick with the 1st.

I liked the first half slightly more than the second. You can't really beat the wits between L and Light. The character interaction was phenomenal.

The second half did have its own merits but the very last episode was disappointing in terms of thrill. If it were L instead of Near, the battle of wits would not have ended as easily as it did.

Hmmmm....if you were talking about the manga, I'd understand. Anime...no. Oh well, to each their own I guess...

I agree and not only did Ryuk get a bit out of character, but Light kinda did too. I mean he made mistakes but I didn't think he wouldn't think of a plan B if Mikami fucked up! Also why would Light lose control like that? He is supposed to be calm and collected and always have a plan in mind but he freaked out and went berserk which is pretty odd considering he is at least L's level of intelligence.

Also another thing, Code Geass was great and R2 was starting out pretty good.. until more people ended up finding out about the fucking Geass.

I think I liked 1st better then the 2nd because in the 2nd half Near was annoying af and insulted L. Also, L was a lot better, I liked Mello and was kinda angry how he 'ended up'. But I still liked 1st better.

I loved both halves. I think most people didn't like the second half only because L died.

That was kind of the point. To portray Light's seduction to power and losing himself. Death Note is the story of his tragic demise.

The second half of the series kind of portrayed Light in the way that he is the bad guy. Throughout the first half, I legitimately wanted him to succeed. During the second half, I found myself more and more wanting Near to win. I really like how the show managed to change my mind like that, without making sudden or abrupt changes in characterization. It was his steady decline fueled by ego and greed.

how can someone hate the second half.. when.. Matt HAPPENS!

No but seriously, Mello made it awesome. A lot of action and hostility was introduced, it really spiced things up.
