When it comes to anime adaptations, it's always preferable to go with the chronological order of the story. Non-chronological storytelling is very good, IF you have all the story in front of you, and can easily backtrack a few pages anytime you want, pick up a few things that you missed before and piece it all together. When you are broadcasting a weekly 20-minute episode though that's not a very good idea - people will just get lost, unless they set up an archive and keep notes, which you don't really want them to do - if the show is not a mystery, you do not want your viewers to have to play detective just to get what's going on... And, all in all, they did a good job. Sure, the pacing was way off, but there was a clear continuity and a clear importance - they were not your run-of-the-mill fillers that feature a sidestory that never even gets mentioned again, they show us how Kirito comes to become who he is. All it asks from the viewer is to bear through a few weeks of mildly episodic action before they are ready for the main plot. If the story itself is decent - which it is -I don't think it's too much to ask. At least it doesn't ask the viewers to continuously watch the same episode for 2 months straight, like a certain other series... |

Yup, that's pretty much it, to be fair, I would rather have a modified story that places better in here than actually trying to push side stories in a mainline just for the sake of main story alone. But considering the options given to the producers, they actually did a decent job comparing with what you said. |

Did you see the LN rankings in sales? It didn't bring up that much for no apparent reason or simply because people liked SAO itself. Most Japanese (aswell we) know that LN always bring best closure, best development and best pace which seems to be the huge issue with SAO. They will buy the LN to have a better understanding of a show they've taken interest for.
