What are some shows you thought everyone was overrating, but found to be at least as good as they said?

Anyone who hasn't seen it might hate it because of the fans on this site but they'll join their ranks once they see it.. I can bet on that.

Indeed. That's why I try to keep my enthusiasm for the show at a low roar and stay a devoted fan rather than a rabid one.

Baccano!
I went in to it thinking it'd be your average shounen action series à la naruto but it actually turned out to be really great.
Even though I belive it would have been a lot better if it had been more of a thesis/proposition on the psychologial; philosophical; and moral ramifications of immortality.
Instead that part of the series felt more like a gimmick, rather than a focus.

Madoka
Even though it's not done yet, I didn't think it would be this good.
Although I do see a potential within the plot that could ruin it, where the narrative is weaved so thin that it could go in any direction. They're balancing a gold ignot on a house of cards.
But I don't think it'll happen.

Spice & Wolf
Who knew a show about medieval microeconomics could actually be interesting?
I need a third season already!!!

For me, about 20 per cent of the top 500 lived up to their "hype." . . . . not that I chose to watch all of the top 500 . . . .

Definitely gonna have to go with Evangelion. I remember watching it as a kid and being like UM WUT. Then I go back after being told it's great to find out it's far far better than I remembered.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I remember thinking of how average it felt at first, then it just kept getting better and better.

Aria as well, I was never one to enjoy the really slow paced shows, but this series just blew me away, absolutely fantastic.

I assumed Bakemonogatari was going to be SHAFT doing their entertaining but - let's be frank here - ultimately pandering adaptation shtick with some decent characters who fans would rave over for no apparent reason.

It actually turned out to be one of my favourite anime everrrr simply because I let myself get caught in SHAFT's attempts to amuse, entertain and ultimately provide an incomplete, unsatisfactory conclusion, because it was just that good.

Oh and Freezing; people told me it was watchable. Despite my doubts, it was indeed watchable - I'd even go so far to say enjoyable.

Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist both lived up to their hype, they're both masterpieces in their own right. I love Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but the hype has very little to do with that, it may be a bit overrated but it's one of my favorites. I loved Baccano before I knew there was any hype, I was one of the people hyping it, lol.

One Piece is suprisingly enjoyable, so I can agree with that.

Baccano! and Durarara!! both got their fair share of hype upon release and, after seeing them both, I can agree that they're both pretty damn fine.

Aria also comes to mind, although I went for the manga before the anime and it's incredible.

Good to see Madoka being mentioned in here. Unfortunately my hyping of it doesn't seem to be as effective in my society :(.

K-on! TV-1
Azumanga Daoh - i can't stand it ._. srry people
Code Geass TV-1
Claymore
Toaru Majutsu no Index
Inuyasha - great start, but it's getting plain boring after 60+ eps, srry

Out of big shonen stuff:
Naruto - sorta ok
FMA - ok
One Piece - sure is ok
Bleach - ok, if you'll threw off all of the filler stuff

325 episodes ago I never would have thought I'd be enjoying One Piece as I am now. Sure, every now and then it frustrates me when it comes to pacing. But, the good far out ways the bad, and I'm getting to the point where I'm considering it a great series.

Gurren Lagann. I remember a bunch of people telling me "OMG it's the best thing ever and it's SO EPIC you have to watch it!!" Based on first impressions, I didn't think I was going to enjoy it all that much and I thought everyone was just over-hyping it -- but by the time it was finished I agreed that it was epic and I enjoyed it a lot. :P

Lucky Star is the only one that comes to mind. Everything else I watched because I wanted to but the majority of top rated shows on here are overrated anyway.

Not a single one. Every anime I a forced to watch due to peer pressure that I know is crap and overrated turned out to be exactly what I thought it was going to be. It is why I got rid of that friend.

Hey between good anime and friends....well I got enough friends already.

We'll see whenever I get around to watching magical madoka.

Until then, little comes to mind. Even though haruhi is in my top 5 anime, I will neve disagree with the fact that it is overrated. I guess mushishi (although that show doesn't have fans screaming about how amazing it is)

Angel Beats! I was skeptical at first because the topics hard to read with everyone tearing it apart looking for higher meaning but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi movie, when I saw what Kyoani had done with Endless Eight I thought it would be a troll fest of epic proportions. Luckily it turned out to be quite a movie and one of the best anime movies I've seen up to date.

LoGH. I mean I kinda knew it would be a good anime, but everyone was hyping it up to be absolutely amazing. After watching it, I realized it really was that good lol. Welcome to the NHK also quite surprised me. Going in, I was thinking it was just a highly rated comedy. Never thought it'd be so contemplative. Oh and I also remember watching through the 1st half of Haibane Renmei thinking it was hella overrated. But that's when I got to the 2nd half of it...
