It's counter productive for me, I end up not concentrating on reading and end up wasting my time reading stuff that my brain doesn't compute. Well, there are exception, some instrumental/classical playing smoothly in the background isn't bad.

Music always distracts me, so no. I can't concentrate and I'll start getting off track.

I've never been able to focus on reading while listening to music. I used to get really pissed off at my brother when he would play electric guitar while I was trying to read/study. :P

I'm a horrible multi-tasker, unfortunately. I've tried listening to music and reading at the same time but then I end up turning the music off because it doesn't let me concentrate. :3

Depends on the situation. If it's actual reading then I usually try to get it as quiet as possible.

if you're talking about studying from textbooks then it's time to bust out some classic Yiruma tracks or the KEY OST Packs (:

Well depends on what I'm reading but when it comes to Horror I've found out that it makes reading 100% better with some Infected Mushroom.
But otherwise when it's rather large manga (like Bleach, Naruto, One piece, Slam dunk etc.) I listen only when there's going to be huge epic battles.

I guess it's because of the frustrating Math problems?

No. Can't focus at all especially when I know the lyrics(and if I really like the song). On special occasions, I do listen to some to mellow/instrumentals. Depends on how I prioritize what I'm reading I guess.

This.
I envy those who can listen and actually understand what they're reading at the same time.

I can read fine without listening to music, but I do like listening to music while reading if I can find something appropriate. If I'm reading a manga, I'll sometimes play its anime's OST in the background (Volume 6 of Akira + Tetsuo Theme = EPIC). A lot of the music I listen to is either instrumental or ambient, so it doesn't distract and instead helps immerse me in what I'm reading if I find a good match for the story.

If I don't forget it... Yes! xD

And I just listen to what is already in my cd-player...
Songs in motherlanguage, english or japanese
and sometimes instrumentals...

;P
If you long enough in school you need to learn reading while talking is around you!

Even though I'm listening to music a lot, it just distracts me when I'm reading ><

Sometimes I do, but other times I feel as though it's just a huge distraction. I guess it depends on the type of music that's being played. I'm most certainly not going to listen to my hard rock while attempting to read poetry, haha. But maybe if there's just classical music or something playing, I could concentrate.

If it's manga though, I'm capable of reading regardless of what's in the background. Kind of strange now that I think about it. xD

Really depends what your reading and what kind of music your listening too, but me personal i don't listen to any music while reading. But maybe if it sort of makes the story interesting why not listen to some music while reading.

Yeah but not with novels, only school books and internet forums. I like imagining every aspect of the fantasy novels I read and don't want distractions besides a crackling fire, etc.

I do, but sometimes it distracts me and I take twice the time.
When I'm reading manga, I just can't resist listening to something...something that matches (or not...well, most likely something I am addicted at that moment...), though for text books I'd rather not to...I really get lost in my imagination. As for studying...hell no!

The denser the language, the harder it is to focus with background music/noise. Music is fine for something light like manga.

Yes, I feel it's completely necessary to have some sort of music on if I'm to enjoy a book nowadays. It's gotten to the point where it's hard to read without music on.

As for what I listen to, I listen to the same music as I do regularly, which is anything I'm into at the moment. It can be rock, electronic, symphonic, jazz, basically anything, though I usually end up liking the progressive elements of any genre more than their bread and butter bands.

I like bread and butter :]

I guess after all this, I should come out and give the truth of my experience. When I made this thread I had a habit of reading while listening to music, but now that a year has gone past, I have to say that I don't anymore, and haven't for months. I noticed a few months ago that when I listened to music while reading I was being given an artificial set of emotions to fix with the book. A few months ago I had also read the book 1984 for the first time. This was the first book I didn't listen to music with... The emotions; the thoughts I had developed while experiencing each and every one of Winston's harrowing encounters were so vivid; so exhilarating. I had never felt so genuine and alive while reading a book; and I had never felt so utterly helpless when finishing it. I guess what I'm saying is that music doesn't make a book; it can make a book what you like, but it'll never let you experience its true ideological gait.

I don't typically listen to music while reading, but every once in a while I will put on some ambient music or something of that sort; something which doesn't really suggest too much in the way of emotion, but just provides a nice, meditative atmosphere.
