So mal standards have changed a lot over the last decade like with youtube shifting to ai moderation. I see more and more posts disappear or get locked from older threads from several years ago. I was wondering what the general consensus is on sanitization
.
Should older posts that do not follow modern rules be removed?
Do you think sanitization serves a greater good?

Modern internet sanitization reminds me of people who constantly wash their hands for no reason other than a their mental issue.

I agree, the new moderators are on a power trip. They make up some bullshit reason for locking a thread like "not encouraging discussion" but that simply isn't true, the threads are sometimes multiple pages long. So they must mean to say that it's not encouraging discussion that they approve of.

They also think that the debate of western media vs anime and the decline of western media are "highly-debated social and/or moral issues", so they shut down threads in the anime discussion forum for this reason.

It amazes me how universal the disdain to censorship is despite how it ever expands.

Not a fan of it. I prefer a mostly hands-off approach to moderation and it should mainly exist to get rid of things that actually break the law or could cause harm to a website like botting. I also think that removing things like doxing and targeted hate against individual users makes perfect sense.
What I'm tired of is when websites start trying too hard to appeal to what they think that their advertisers might like and dislike

rohan121 said:

It really depends on the rule. I'm generally not in favor of retroactively going back and removing things but again, it completely depends on the context

Maybe the greater good of the shareholders and the advertisers of the websites that engages in that kind of practice

It tends to be a bad thing, especially how they go about it and what they are trying to "protect" against.

I can't think of a more boring and pointless thing to do than moderating a forum. No mentally healthy person would volunteer to do it for free, hence why it's so common to see moderators display unreasonable or even downright insane behavior. I am talking about internet moderators in general, but obviously MAL mods are no different.

Answering the question, no, I don't like it and I think the internet should be as uncensored as possible.

@queenofautism I think that's an unfair perspective to have. If you're part of a website or community then of course you'd want to keep it good. It's natural. Sure there will always be some clowns who're getting high off their perceived power but I don't think that people who apply to be a mod or janny are malicious for doing so

I do not follow all of the threads locked, especially the old ones cause I have the forum boards filtered to show the most recent topics created but I do know quite a bit of the rules here and they are not that strict as it is believed not to mention that it is in public and you can reach guidelines at any moment while browsing forums - and also remember each mod/adming isn't an almighty all knowing deity, everyone can make a mistake, even locking a thread which wasn't supposed to be locked can be a mistake and vice versa, not noticing a thread which should be locked is also a mistake, but it is easier to spot a job/activity which you dislike about them, than noticing the job which is done by them which you would consider to be positive. The last thread on which I tried to write and was locked while I was writing a reply was that one about banning christianity x)

For censorship etc. In my honest opinion the ones whom are the most loud and posts the most about "freedom" of speech or freedom to express something are the same people whom would be the very first people to lock/ban/block/delete anything which is against their views, their opinions etc. There's way too many examples even in nowadays but even telling them here is already controversial so those whom browsed enough social media and specific people spreading their own propaganda should already know what type of people I am writing about in this section. So to wrap it up, I don't think a full "Uncensorship" is appropiate, but I also think that too much of censoring is either bad, there needs to be a balance, something of a "good taste" which would compromise people, without even mentioning the clash of different cultures and different national laws under which people are being raised. No matter if it is a fresh thread or a thread created a decade ago.

I'm completely against deleting things unless there are really harmful contents which in over 99.99% of the cases isn't the case. Especially not for long-locked threads.

It makes everything boring and is always result of lazy moderation, biased moderation, and corpo PR virtue signaling to advertisers. MAL doesn't need to filter what is said but how what is said.

Guess I got to go neutral with this one. It depends on what's being sanitized. Honestly it seems like everything in general is being pretty sanitized these days, not just the internet.

It's bad. Most websites or anywhere on the internet these days just over-moderate and give janny's way too much power. Everything being sanitized to the point where any kind of wrongthink gets you banned somewhere just makes for a very boring time online anymore. Also censoring people never works and only makes them dig into their ideals even more when it gets them banned.

I remember, I posted a fact backed with literal cited peer reviewed studies on a controversial topic on GameFaqs and got an 8 month ban along with no more access to their CE board. It was an answer to the question of the post with just simple facts.

I would say “no.” I assume that the vast majority of forum users don’t check old threads and posts that were made years ago. No need for removal if no one’s being harmed.

Sanitization of posts that were made years ago seems like a pretty pointless endeavor lol. But, if we're talking about sanitization of the more recent posts, then that's kind of a different story. In the case of the latter, I don't think there's much to really change other than "don't go too hard on the sanitization."

I am somewhat ambivalent though wistful for a time when we have fundamentally less surveillance and more freedom than we do now. Though again, is it actually sanitized? We literally saw a murder attempt and a torture murder being streamed on Kick. MAL is not representative of the wider internet. which I argue has regressed in terms of sanitization in the last decade, especially on Twitter and TikTok. Have you seen the shitshow with Roblox?

I think the issue is more or less that the internet has largely homogenized culture along the lines of commercialization. Everything is done for profit, from right-wing grifting to pornography. What is sanitization? In my experience the opposite has largely been true outside of MAL. Everything has gotten shittier and became a scam.

If we speak of moderation, as a whole it is for the greater good. I hate Reddit mods and most other mods (Not you MAL mods), but every site needs some form of moderation, even illegal ones. I do agree MAL has gotten harsher, but 2013-2018 MAL was not a paradise at all. Much of it was because moderators were not even enforcing their own rules. For all my grievances, I do think the forums are "better", and has for now struck a balance between allowing you of all people to continue posting your insane drivel and banning people like thesuave who genuinely make the community worst.

A healthy community, like a plant, has to be pruned. It all depends on what community you want, and I imagine you and I have very different utopias. Most of the users who I know are banned deserved it, and quite frankly there are people still posting to whom I think a ban is warranted if not for their own mental health.

Moderators are humans and they often get assblasted by posts.

The best part is that all this moderation and code of conducts bring millions of people out of the plantation. There is the fediverse, the darknet(s), p2p internet and so much more. Communities that don't give a shit about pandering to the modern audience or creating a safe space for every snowflake. There are even decentralized communities that cannot be moderated.

Eventually censorship and AI will drive users out of the clearnet in places unreachable from the grip of the government, payment processors and corpos. I think in the next 5 years services like torbox would be indispensable. When you create an internet that is not friendly to users then users will move elsewhere.

@XMGA030 They really give resetera a run for their money on how shit of a site they are anymore. The kicker on my ban was that I couldn't even appeal it to a higher mod, so some shitmod just hands out a ban for wrongthink with actual FACTS.

It sucks cause I used to love that site back in the 2000s and early 2010s.

I know the feeling. There was a thread celebrating hulk hogan's death and I got a 6 month ban for posting "RIP the hero who slayed Gawker."

The reason they gave me was "hate speech."

You can't make this shit up.
