Ok, the title is strange, but it was hard to summarise it up without having some really weird title.

So, to put it not so simply, "blood-related" love, to put it in the nicest way, has always been a trope in anime. Then you have the classic "NOT blood-related but" love excuse. Now, whether this is your cup of tea or not, it's always had a bit of a looseness to it, that this is clearly not real, it's just a show, this wouldn't happen in real life sought of deal. Some anime did just go the full yards with it, but in the end, even those still had a disconnect in some way that allowed the audience to suspend their disbelief.

Shiunji Family feels like it is lacking that disconnect at the moment. Sure, such a family probably doesn't exist too such an extent, but the kind of relationships they have with each other is very much a human thing you can see in the real world. From here, we look at our protagonist, Arata. His love towards his siblings are simply that, love of siblings. Now, why the whole reveal of being adopted throws a wrench in that, if your feelings could change so easily because of such information, then maybe those feelings weren't that strong in the first place. He clearly has some mixed emotions, and feels confused at the moment, which is understandable, but as he said to himself, they are all siblings to each, even if they're not related by blood.

So why ask "Will any of the potential loves ever NOT be weird?". Well the problem here is that I think the fact that they, or at least mainly Arata, sees each other as siblings, means that if they were to ever get into a relationship, that would be the same as getting into a relationship with your sister, even if they aren't related by blood. Add to that, that Kotono being the most forward one, even though she is the youngest and barely turned 15, which makes things feel even weirder; You can see how all of this makes the whole part about him getting into a relationship with any of them would be really weird!

To clarify, I do like this show. It has been fun, and there are definitely weirder shows out there, even done by Reiji-kun himself. It's just that this problem is hampering my enjoyment of the show, and I'm kind of on team "Please just get friendzoned". Anyway, sorry for the rant, just wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on the matter, or if anyone else felt the same.

Love always wins.

Anyway, those are the things that can only work out in fiction and people are aware of that. I am also not really bothered by it, because it is fiction. Also, it's from the author of Rent a Girlfriend and you can enjoy his works only if you don't take them seriously.

I have two sisters, which I love very much and it never ever crossed my mind for anything... you know. And even if I would try to imagine, I would cringe and recoil in disgust.
It's pretty obvious, that familial bond is much more than just blood relation (something that Dragon Maid actually teaches very well) and mother who raised you suddenly saying "you're adopted" doesn't mean you can just start making out with her like in those popular memes.

I can’t really argue with this take. I only have 1 sister but I would prefer to push her off a cliff than get physically involved ๐Ÿคฎ
I watch because all the girls are great, well rounded, well designed characters but the best end would be an unrelated classmate.

gang there is nothing "familial" abt their relationship in this anime tho like ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Hello? Banri "Teasing" Arata at every moment in suggestive ways. Seiha Testing his brothers limits and "urges" by latching ontop of him. Him literally Oggaling his sisters ever since this RECENT and SUDDEN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THEY ARENT BLOOD RELATED?? ARE WE WATCHING THE SAME ANIME?? KOTONO LITRALLY FORCING HERSELF ON HIM LIKE BRO HOW IS THIS BY ANY MEANS FAMILIAL ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ WHATS HITTING CLOSE TO HOME BRO WATCHU GOT GOIN ON ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

As a brother with 2 sisters WHY IN GODS GREEN EARTH ARE U WATCHING AN IMOUTO ROMANCE ANIME AND RELATING IT TO IN REAL LIFE GANG ๐Ÿ’€

We watch these animes bc it's degenerate asf and its a guilty pleasure in a situation that is HIGHLY unlikely in irl So we watch as whoever the mc is go through "Weird" situations with his sister(s). That's what makes it shamefully fun. I genuinely don't know why ppl seek out anime like this expecting genuine connection to in real life experiences. ITS CONCERNING ASF ๐Ÿ˜ญ I get that wasn't ur initial thing starting this anime. But man seriously put down the rose tinted glasses and start thinking more before u start to genuinely consider anything in an ANIME is realistic. Because the truth is it isn't. It's all exaggerated for the artform and that's what it is. And artform.

100% agree. People say I’m weird because I like incest anime even though I have an IRL sister, which is so stupid. If I like murder and gore in anime, doesn’t mean I like murder and gore in real life…

Incest anime are just dumb, turn your brain off content, and I love every minute of most of them.

Anime isn’t real, it’s just lines and circles. So just enjoy it for what it is.

So yeah for OP, it’ll always we weird, but a fun stupid weird.

I think at its core the one who makes it weird is Arata, because I mean he tends to stare at his sisters a lot.

Realistically everyone else except perhaps Banri is just acting like siblings or at least have pure love intentions.

Take Kotoko she’s blatantly in love and imo the strongest of the siblings for being able to admit it. It’s not like she wants to be physically intimate with him the moment they start dating because at least to me her love is portrayed as very pure.

And I think this recent episode at least it felt more like a sibling bonding episode and disregarded love for once to focus on everyone’s bonds on helping Minami

And I mean regarding irl I doubt you’d find this situation irl with multiple siblings but I mean I’m sure you find somewhat similar situations occasionally.

@Dellio_man That's the thing. I've watched weirder stuff. Much weirder. Just for some reason, this one just feels like it's fallen into some kind of uncanny valley type situation, would be how I best describe it

You described it perfectly as to why I dropped this show relatively early on, I can neither take this show seriously, nor can I just have fun with it. It's just uncomfortable for me. And yeah, I've seen much weirder stuff as well.

@Dellio_man @Yuki_Niji I mean, yeah, clearly the way his sisters act with him is definitely not normal. However, from my point of view, I think that the fact that we don't get to see it from the sister perspectives as much leads to some greyness about how they feel about him. Like, sure, Banri's "teasing" is quite out there, but it's not like it clearly showing she has some sought of more romantic or sexual feelings towards him, rather, we don't get to see what she is truly thinking. Arata on the other hand clearly sees his sisters as just that, sisters. While anime does tend to go out there a lot, I feel like there are some lines that shows will and won't cross, depending on what they're going for. Shiunji Family doesn't feel like it's trying to cross that line, but I feel like no matter who Arata ends up with, it will cross that line.

Of course, it's a Reiji-kun series, so maybe I just had to much expectation for normalcy in this one, and should've just given up from the start, but I feel like it's on the opposite side of the weirdness border that Rent a Girlfriend lies on.

@GakutoDeathGlare Yeah, it does feel like it had a side to pick, and by picking neither, it really got muddled by the quirks that lay on the more weird side of anime. Those shows aren't bad per se, but they are what they are, and they know where they stand
