Yep, I just got an update on it yesterday. I find it shocking that people think it is not. It is. Still being supported right now.

Then again, if you don't wanna get hacked online, you shouldn't be using Windows. In the first place. You should be using Linux if you actually cared about privacy and/or security.

No amount of anti-virus software will protect you from hackers if the OS you use is easily-hackable (by design).

@DesuMaiden False information about Windows 8.1 End of Life sourced by Microsoft itself is something one must see to believe. Microsoft already released updates for Operating Systems past EoL for a few reasons including security, but it does not mean Microsoft still supports the OS. Updates for the .NET Framework, for an example, are outside the OS scope.

Fact is, Windows 8.1 is past EoL. No support coming from Microsoft. No documentation sourced from Microsoft regarding any support contract for the OS.

Why use 8.1? Use a real OS like Vista.

@Theo1899 because most Steam games are not compatiable with Vista. It requires Windows 7 and above. In 2024. Vista is not compatiable with most software in 2024.

There had been ESU (extended security update) for customers of Windows 7 who had paid for those security updates:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/faq/extended-security-updates

I'm not aware of anything like that being offered for Windows 8.1, though

Indeed, there are some updates for Windows 8.1 embedded still being pushed, but it's not an official extension of the support like how it used to be for Windows XP embedded because there are not that many machines running it

It's probably the malicious removal tool that gets pushed every patch tuesday regardless of support status.

Also, technically Server 2012 R2 ESUs can be installed on 8.1, but I won't comment on how or why.

"Mainstream support for Windows 8.1 ended on January 9, 2018, and extended support ended on January 10, 2023."

No way Microsoft sent you an update. Maybe a driver update? Maybe bait? Who knows. OP, send us a screenshot of the update. Go to control panel --> program & features --> view installed updates. Take a screenshot with snipping tool and post it.
