I am wondering if there is currently any way to do an advanced search for anime based on the source, such as visual novels, manga, light novel, or original.

I'd like this function as well. Sometimes I'm in the mood to watch something original, but not being able to search for them makes finding interesting titles difficult.

Here are some tips for doing advanced searches to find anime based on the source material:

  • Use sites like MyAnimeList or Anime-Planet that allow searching by source work. You can search for anime adapted from specific manga, novels, games, etc.
  • On streaming sites like Crunchyroll or VRV, use quotes around the source title to search for anime adaptations. For example "Attack on Titan" to find anime based on the manga.
  • Search databases like Anime News Network or AniDB using filters for source work, adapted from, and related adaptations. Useful for finding different versions of the same franchise.
  • Google with site filters can also work. For example: "yakuza anime" site:myanimelist.net finds anime adapted from the Yakuza games.
  • Leverage sites like Reddit, Wikipedia, and fandom wikis to find lists of adaptations from a specific source work. Useful for comprehensive searches.
  • Follow creators, studios, and publishers to stay updated on new anime adaptations they announce from existing popular works.
  • Check out seasonal anime previews that highlight upcoming adaptations each season and link back to the source material.

The key is using databases that index the source work information and leveraging search operators and filters. Taking advantage of anime knowledge bases can help surface adaptations you may have missed.

There isn't a way, you can scream into the void on this thread to remind the MAL devs that people want this : https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1855247

My solution last year was to scrape MAL's anime database and store it in a SQL database to query whatever I wanted. I put the top original anime and stuff in 2 blog posts as well

Top Original Anime : https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=886642
Top LN, VN and Game adaptations : https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=886643

I should have added hyperlinks to each title but err I was too lazy at the time

@fron8861 No fucking way you used ChatGPT for this answer. The whole point of this thread is that the function DOESN'T exist on MAL.

This was asked before.
Unfortunately MAL sucks at adding good suggestions.
