he was always helpful to random people as long as they are with him. As a player he was loner but not unhelpful.

being a solo player doesn't mean you like to watch people die. he also joins the one group in the show. you know, where the thing happens

the reason he stayed solo was because of the 1st floor Boss's accident. while he was a solo player while playing the Beta version, like most people. he never intended to go solo after being cooped up in the game, regarding his decision to rush to the next town in episode 1 was made just because all the players were in that town so it would be difficult to farm, he asked Klein to join him but Klein declined his offer because he is looking for other friends.

In the first SAO Progressive Light Novel, the reason that Kirito says he's a "beater" is because he wants to focus all the negativity adressed towards the beta tester unto him. He played "4D chess" so that the other beta testers wouldn't get hated.
So yeah, I would say Kirito would save a random girl from dying.

I wouldn't say he was a loner. He was shy and socially awkward - we did see him save her from certain death at the very last second. Just because he's a "loner," doesn't mean he'll be willing to let somebody die.
If you're talking about what he says after being accused of "beta testing," he was talking out of his ass. He was driven to the point of becoming a solo player and gave the party a final middle finger before departing. Why would he stay with a bunch of people that didn't trust him, anyway? There was no point in trying to reason with them because even Asuna, who had never played the game before, was being dragged into it.
