Once again, we have been blessed with more animated Rumiko goodness (and every day I keep my hopes higher and higher for a reboot fully adapting Ranma at last, in one way or another, like what is happening in here)!

Urusei Yatsura is quite an insane, over-the-top, fast paced and hilarious piece of the 80s that is getting a revival now, following the trend JoJo set early 2010s'. And would you look at that, it's just as chaotic as it has ever been lol

However, maybe not so chaotic of an adaptation per se compared to the Haruhi levels of out-of-order the original TV adaptation was, while adapting roughly 29 out of 34 volumes (which then gave quite a fun twist for each plot being adapted by using different characters and different gags within the premise of the adapted chapters, depending on who was or wasn't introduced up to that point).

That being said, for the most part the results for such a grand mix were usually positive in one way or another, giving the plots a new spin that surprised readers that were eager to see how the different approach of the adaptation would be each week, creating an engaging run where there's always something new that could or not come from a known story (the big reason likely was to introduce more aliens asap and use them as filler/padding as it seemed fit for the staff).

Here, I'll be listing and updating every week a list of each difference in adaptation other, as well as when said chapter was adapted in the first anime. Whenever a chapter never adapted before pops up in this new adaptation, I'll mark it as *FTE* (first time ever).

Episode List:

Chapters 1 & 5 (80s' adapted them in EP1 and EP6 respectively)

EP4 (2022)

EP5 (1981)
Chapters 4 & 37
EP5 (2022)
Chapter 37's introduction mixed within Chapter 216's plot & Chapter 26 (80s' adapted them in EP5, EP116 and EP10 respectively)

EP6 (1981)
Chapters 5 & 2
EP6 (2022)

You wrote a paragraph to just say "Mamoru Oshii directed the first 103 episodes so they were incredible"

The post is more along the lines of
"The original series didn't try to follow the source material 100% but the result was good".
Although I agree that Oshii did a good job despite what Rumiko thought.

Yup, that sums it up quite well haha

I grew up with Ranma ( here hoping for a reboot as well) but only watched the first two episodes for Urusei, I really loved, but didn't have the time to continue so I was in doubt which I wanted to watch when the reboot started.
I'm loving the reboot, but seeing it just made me want to watch and read the original even more, so it's realy nice to see that there are so many differences!

Oh, I wish they would have adapted the whole 25th chapter, the second part where Lum enters the classroom in ''incognito'', disguised as a regular human girl, was superfunny ! Surely one of my fav Lum performance - the last part where she shreds her schoolgirl clothes like a She-Hulk and her horns suddenly become MASSIVE is hysterical ! :D

And yes, it wasn't in the OG anime at all, not a single part of it. I wonder why... and to think they adapted so many worse chapters at the time :/

Some just didn't made the cut and they kinda forgot about them.

I remember like, chapter 11 being adapted as late as episode 141 if memory doesn't fail me lol

Oh, so that explains why most of it was unfamiliar to me. Keep up the good work.

This is great, I hope you keep doing this as the series go forward (if it's not too much work)!

(It's much better than the the thread with the guy crying over boobs not being shown)

Thanks, this is great info! Always interesting to see how they cover an epic episodic show like this.

For an editorial side thought, do you like the adaptation better in any of the new episodes?

This post is very insightful. Appreciate the comparisons between the 80s anime and the remake.

Cheers to more chaotic mayhem in the upcoming episodes.

I don't favor any of them over the other and would consider both efforts to be as passionate equivalently, to be honest. There's a lot of heart in both adaptations, and I think they are doing a great job here overall, while also having a slightly different vibe and approach to both the comedic timing for the slapstick and the overall execution of certain deliveries (a bit bolder with the intimacy between Lum and Ataru is a imo more fitting nowadays than the slightly less spicy older version, which in turn is pretty funny, since this is toning down a little bit the fanservice by not showing the few nipples the OG and the manga had, for example haha). You can always count on David Productions to do that WHILE maintaining that good old 80s' vibe Rumiko is so famous for even in her latest manga works.

I personally like the chaotic energy of the series better when it's executed the same way as the far more electric in the OVAs in particular, since the animation is so lively and there's always movement and subtle expressiveness/body language happening on screen, so this new adaptation is doing wonders with just that. I think both are really funny in their own way, and with their own spice for the presentation.

EP4 (2022)
TBD (At least Chapter 137 going by the title alone, in short, EP48)

EP4 should be a fun one, because they will have to cover at least parts of chapters 16 and 17 for it to work together with 136, 137 and 138 (which is basically a mini arc). They are probably going to fuse plotlines like several episodes from the old anime did in the past, can't wait for the usual madness lol

Well, I guessed just right.

136-138 got adapted, mixed with a little baseline for 16 (but not 17, since they just skipped her "second chance for a kiss" little plot. Very funny standalone introduction as a result, in my opinion a bit more consistent than the original in a way (because of the rules supposedly being ABSOLUTE according to the Eldest, so a second chance was kinda nonsensical to even be considered haha).

Anyway, I'll update it now.

EP5 was the first time the both series touch the same ground together, with chapter 37 being somewhat part of them (Sakura becoming the nurse at the school, while also setting up the plot involving her in 216 right then and there). Overall, great stuff as always.

EP8 was kind of a mess to organize, so I decided to highlight in red whichever FTE content it corresponds to as well. EP18 adapted Chapters 55 and 58, just in case it isn't clear enough.
Chapter 48 is only a third of EP33, which adapted Chapters 49 and 50 as well.

even though the new anime is more faithful, skipping the Taxi episode and introducing Rei after Mendou and Ran is a huge mistake IMO
