Some of the anime that I've watched (Touch and Haikyuu, for example) have entire movies that are dedicated to just recapping everything that's happened, and I'm not too sure on why these are a thing. If you want to look back on a major event that happened that you're fond of, you can just go back to the episode in which it occurred.

If you are a fan of a certain anime that you watched on TV or your PC, wouldn't you want to re-watch the most important parts of it on a big screen in a theater, with high quality image and sound? (popcorn optional) Well, maybe you wouldn't, but a lot of people do. I at least would love to have the chance of watching scenes of my favorite series in a theater.
Besides, the anime is already made, so compiling the movie is relatively simple for the studio, as a way of making a bit more money out of the series.
Of course, downloading and watching the movie on your PC when you've already watched the series seems quite pointless. But it's not the movie's fault, since it wasn't made for that in the first place: you can't ask it to be something it was never meant to be.

It's easy money. 99% of the scenes are already animated and voiced. Sometimes you add a few scenes or cut them up and you're done. There ar some people in japan who watch movies like this in the cinema. Not many, but enough. And since the cost to produce them is so low it is very profitable.

It's pointless. I rather watch new anime then rewatching the same shit over and over.

Some of them exist to go into depth on a plot element the original anime may have not been able to explore due to budget

For example, the Nanoha franchise was the very first anime made by it's animation studio which understandably had a limited budget and a huge portion of the fandom prefers the films over the seasons because they were mostly an excuse to take plot elements that had to be abandoned and insert them into an actual series. If you don't watch them your essentially skipping the only place you can see scrapped characters, events, abilities, ect. that previously only existed in audio dramas and interviews with the writers.

I don't think they should be dismissed outright for this very reason

Money. That's all it takes, especially when there already is a market for it.

I dunno why newer anime do it, but older anime did because VHS and DVD wasn't really huge and reruns were uncommon, so they made them to catch new fans up or to recap for people out of touch with the series.

That's why all the original Dragon Ball movies are nothing but recaps.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Like others said it prints money since Japanese fans are going to see it anyway. Made In Abyss had two recap movies that lead to a third movie that was actually cannon.

Mostly because hardcore fans will consume whatever they put out, even though it might just be a shitty recap. Some recaps are good (some even contain a bit of extra content) but most are just a simple cash grab method

Since S1 came out 3 years before the 3rd movie, it was nice having some recap movies to refresh my memory.

In theory, it can be a preferable experience to have tv eps edited to be a single movie (different pacing not strictly tied to ep length, op/ed removed).

For me they exist for one reason, let's say there would be a recap movies for Bleach canon episodes even if this doesn't exist let's say it does. So with this you can simply rewatch your show in a shorter version by watching the most important scenes to keep them in your mind or else if the show is supposed to have a sequel in next x years you can simply watch recaps and very quickly catch up with the story before starting another season. Even if you can do that with watching certain episode they are extended of such stuff as for example if someone would want to rewatch Bleach they would want to watch only Ulquiorra vs Ichigo without the cuts into Renji, Sado and Rukia fighting with Rudbornn same of other stuff which were extended or happening alongside with different fights which might not be interested for someone who want to be quickly keep up with the major stuff and fights etc.

as usual answerman of ANN knows here

But more than anything, compilation films are just really, really cheap to make. Even if nobody goes to see them, the cost of producing them is a small fraction of the cost to make a single episode of anime. No new animation needs to be made (and if it does, it's usually only a couple of minutes' worth). Usually only a single voice actor is required to add new narration. No new music needs to be composed. Most of the sound design can be re-used. When an entirely new product from an existing franchise can be made for only the cost of hiring a few editors, making it becomes a question of "why not?" https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2016-12-02/.109367

Lazy people can't be bothered to spend three months, or two days on an anime. When they can just watch a two and a half hours movie at most, that does the same as the anime.

It's to remember everything that happened before proceeding to the next season. which still isn't great because there are 10min recaps on yt. idk extra profit probably

Recap movies are dirt cheap to make and easy money. Also it is easier to catch up for people what happened if it been long time from last season.

Sometimes it's done as a filler and sometimes its done before a new season so people can watch the summary instead of doing through all the episodes, in case they forgot what happened so far..
