Saw some images that reminiscent cosmic horror while googling. Furthermore, quite a lot of people on youtube and quora seem to be telling that it indeed is, while redditors are quite skeptical about this. I am a sucker for cosmic horror and Bloodborne is one of my favorite games of all time. Should I expect such elements from this anime as well?

Lovecraftian horror, sometimes used interchangeably with "cosmic horror",[2] is a subgenre of horror fiction and weird fiction that emphasizes the horror of the unknowable and incomprehensible[3] more than gore or other elements of shock.[4]

If this definition from Wikipedia is accurate - then yes, absolutely. That is exactly what Made In Abyss is like.

Hmm Bloodborne is my fav game of all time and I absolutely the atmosphere it has. I also love MIA because of atmosphere it has they both have the horror elements but I would say they’re slightly different. Maybe it’s because you actually playing it but to me bloodborne definitely makes me feel more nervous but thrilled. MIA has lovecraftian horror I would say especially in the third movie but it also has more of a fantasy magic feel as opposed to victorian buildings and steampunk. Still it’s very unique and I would absolutely recommend watching it.

yes made in abyss is dark soul, blood born world but in the deep abyss.

the losing sanity, corruptions, mind breaking, madness & mutations turn into monster also exist in made in abyss by the more you go deep inside the abyss.

so is made in abyss have cosmic horor and bloodbone element ? yes.

specially if you put theory what if actually planet / the earth of made in abyss is living thing ? that our mc actually goes deep from the mouth of the planet in to belly / core / heart of the planet its self ? that actually really really dangerous.

if you play "darkes dungeon in steam", made in abyss actually very similar as darkest dungeon world.

Well, the Abyss is unknown, but Riko and Reg venture down willingly. It’s more exiting than terrifying. The horror comes from the side effects of going back up, which are known and unavoidable. There’s also the cruelty of people like Bondrewd, but that is the norm in any horror genre except maybe cosmic horror. MiA generally doesn’t go for the same kind of creepiness, though, it relies more on uncomfortable scenes and gore. But as a Lovecraft fan, even though it’s not the same kind of horror, the idea of the Abyss itself is very intriguing, it’s the same feeling of wanting to know more at your own risk.

Well for me, bloodborne's nervousness came from the sheer difficulty rather than the unsettling atmosphere. It did create a very gloomy depressing environment, which created anxiousness rather than nervousness. Thanks for the perspective.

So the lovecraftian concept of the anime stems from the intensity of the adventure rather than the eldritch creatures themselves?

Darkest Dungeon had been on my list since god knows when. I'll definitely try out both.

That sounds a lot like The call of Cthulhu.

It absolutely is. A very big part of the show is the idea of a drive, this drive to go to the abyss to an adventure of no return, knowing fully that there will be horrific parts to it... It is insanity, bluntly so. This drive to the macabre unknown, and what people are willing to sacrifice for their wishes to come true, are discovered in so many gory details that even if the abyss and it's creatures weren't in the story, I would still call it cosmic/lovecraftian horror.

I don’t think it is lovecraftian, in particular. Love craft was more about a completely unknowable, extremely powerful set of greater beings that have no more concern for humans than humans have for lower organisms like bacteria. Such different orders of magnitude that any sort of relationship or understanding is not only highly improbable, but actually impossible because of the differences.

There are some dark, scary, and surreal elements to MiA, but I don’t see it in the same way as I see the universe Lovecraft describes in his stories.

I love MiA and Lovecraft both, and I think people who like one will be more likely to enjoy the other. But I don’t think that’s because they’re the same, I think it’s because of the imaginative narrative structure and world-building.

I mean, fans nicknamed the Abyss itself Creepy Uncle Lovecraft's Funtime Murder Hole for a reason.

Yes it is heavily implied forces beyond the realm of humanity are at work.

Time and space distortions are a big clue pointing to this possibility.

It is lovecraftian in many ways and also not in many ways. Like you can sorta find explanation to things in made in abyss but there are no explanation to things in lovecraft universe, also the creatures can be tackled of fought off with power ups and what not, plus that's like flora and fauna of that world, but lovecraft creatures are like time and space itself and doesn't make any sense at points like you know it made sense but it doesn't.

Where Made in Abyss is like lovecraft is like fear of unknown or going mad phenomena and body horror as it exist in both world. But lovecraft deals majorly with cosmic horror and there is no such thing as cosmic also the mad phenomena is more of a known fact not like lovecraft like almost all the things will go mad about made in abyss but I would say It is pretty close to what lovecraft horror would be.

Plus riko chose to go on an adventure and no one goes to an adventure in lovecraft universe as they are more of forced to do it.
