When I say worldbuilding I don't mean a tour bus ride taking you to random-ass places, and when I say foreshadowing I don't mean some silly call-backs that might have been cool back in 2004. I want something that completely re-contextualizes the story and changes how you see it upon rewatching it. Best example besides AOT would be Better Call Saul.

Anyone got anything for me?

Since a lot of people have mentioned those as I already watched them:
HxH, Shinsekai Yori: already watched, and it is indeed great at WB and FS
Berserk: not the type of foreshadowing I'm looking for, but the worldbuilding is top-tier
One Piece: don't consider the tie-ins and callbacks as 'foreshadowing' and I'm not a fan of the mix and match WB based too much on our world and existing fairy tales.

Watch berserk 1997, or just go ahead read the manga. Great art, great world-building, great characters, great foreshadowing.

One Piece. People always said it had some of the best worldbuilding and foreshadowing in anime, and I never really believed it until I watched it myself.

It’s actually really impressive how much foreshadowing is used consistently throughout the series. The author is pretty remarkable.

Most ppl have told me One Piece has one of the best world building and foreshadowing, among the recent animes the only ones worth mentioning are 86 and Mushoku Tensei but that's only world building, not foreshadowing. Come to think of it,the anime of 86 hasn't even reached the best part of its world building yet...but the LN is one of the best things I've read. And read Berserk ofc I don't think I've to tell that even.

I've read most of it, and it's actually very linear (the callbacks I was referring to, which I do not consider foreshadowing)

Yeah I'm somewhere around chapter 260, it is in my top 3 already besides AOT and HxH :)

for anime that it looks like you haven't seen already with these things in mind I would recommend Gurren laggan, monster, vinland saga(read the manga later), golden kamuy (it's a bit lesser know but really good and has what you seem to want), and finally ATLA(not technically anime but it's got what your looking for)

Twelve Kingdoms has the best worldbuilding I've ever seen in anime. The mythology, history and political structure of the fantasy realm is explored in great depth and is quite fascinating. And it's not all a bunch of tedious infodumps. The story of the world is integrated alongside the stories of the characters and it flows so smooth.

I'm looking for the opposite of that tbh... like not just 'places' and random lore every now and then but something more.... temporal as well.

I loved the original's (2003) world-building, especially with the original ending. It's that kind of stuff that makes me think...

World-building, One Piece and the Millennium Falcon Arc of Berserk.

Foreshadowing, Re: Zero(even better than AoT) and the Golden Age Arc of Berserk(also better).

Golden Age arc had some lovely bits of foreshadowing but nowhere near the complexity and nuance as AOT, as well-written as that arc may have been, foreshadowing wasn't what made it great.

I'm talking about the small details about how every glance and interaction between Annie and Reiner in the training arc can be understood differently and has a new meaning after a re-watch. AOT has dozens of those high-end foreshadowings, not just the 'hear ye thou shallt be yeeted soon'

The only difference is that one of these has indirect foreshadowing and the other has direct foreshadowing. Both are valid literary devices.

I'm a bigger fan of the subtle, indirect ones. Any author can say "hey something's cooking up" and people will praise how superhuman their foresight is. Literally every Marvel movie does this with the mid and post credit scenes for 2-4 movies ahead. But Isayama actually retroactively shows how much detail he has planned, and his foreshadowing synthesizes new stories or new subplots WITHIN the original foreshadowed scene rather than becoming anchored to the later callback/occurrence. Many detailed actions that may have seemed pointless or served a certain purpose now have a new or additional meaning.

Indirect, huh? I'm pretty sure Berserk also has indirect foreshadowing contained in Guts, Griffith and Casca's relationships. But apart from that, Re: Zero would be it. There's heavy amounts of re-contextualization in S2(the backstories of the characters) and foreshadowing for it in S1. And that's just in 2 seasons out of the 9-10 that are slated to eventually release once the LN is completed.

An isekai that tackles trauma due to isolation and love. Though I would recommend watching the the two seasons to get a grasp of what i'm referring to.

Also, it has nothing to do with the Fate series.

watch Re zero it has good foreshadowing if you finished all of it and re-watch it you will pickup on details that's are important for the plot that you wouldn't even know the first time watching it, rewatching re zero recontextualizes the story.
