| If you've read one and past works of Urobuchi Gen - visual novel named "Saya no Uta" or "The Song of Saya", you can understand what this movie is about. It would also explain what happened at the end of the movie, which is similar to one of the endings of the Song of Saya's. So we can say that this movie is an adaptation of that visual novel. |

| It's mostly an original approach to approach to classic fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" written by Hans Christian Andersen. I'm not saying there weren't any other inspirations. I'm not familiar with "Saya no Uya" either. But I believe that the core theme of this story (not the worldbuilding, but story alone) was "The Little Mermaid". |
