Yes, but this is OEL (or the French alternative for that) - even if it's drawn by a Japanese author, it's published only in France and exclusively for French market.
You all need to watch Nami.

@abystoma2 it’s been released in other countries. You can find it in the manga section of most Barnes and Nobles.

@mooni_ace Only the original publication is relevant for the database purposes. And Barnes and Nobles just put anything enough manga-looking into the manga section.

@abystoma2 Then why are there manhua and manhwa in the database? They have also been originally published outside of Japan, in addition to having been created by non-Japanese authors. I fully understand why being simply manga-looking is not enough, I have a few of them written by Westerners and don't expect/want to find them here. But Beyond the Clouds and some others are more than that and more legitimate on MAL than manhua and manhwa. They have been created by legitimate Japanese mangaka living in Japan, using Japanese language, and are now published in Japan and sold in manga shops. Unless MAL is actually now a website about east Asian comics and animation (why not, but then wrong marketing), and not just Japanese ones, I fail to grasp the logic, and find it almost insulting towards these mangaka.

@Kyragos Because the database also lists manhwa and manhua. Always has been. Not western comics though.

Japanese author publishing comic for a French company is the same as an American company outsourcing animation to a Japanese studio - it doesn't become anime even if it woul later be dubbed in Japanese.

@abystoma2 Let's agree on disagreeing then, but I don't remember seeing so many Chinese/Korean works when I joined, nor any marketing about it then and even now. About your comparison, it works only for works originally dubbed in Japanese, as the original material of these manga is in Japanese, and I would note that is what Netflix has been doing with some of its original animation series found on MAL, i.e. an American company financing, distributing, and sometimes co-producing, an anime created by a Japanese studio and getting exclusive simultaneous worldwide broadcasting rights.

@Kyragos That would be because china really ramped up production of animated series in the recent years and MAL also recently allowed some web-only publications leading to adding hundreds (maybe thousands) of webtoons. So indeed, there weren't that many before, but other than the webcomic ruling (which applies to Japanese comics too) the rules haven't changed.

From what I understand Beyond the Clouds was first published in France, so the original language is French, no?

@abystoma2 Beyond the Clouds was first published in France, but Nicke, the mangaka, wrote it in Japanese. It was then translated in French by the publisher. Let's also note that the manga is based on a doujinshi she sold at a Japanese convention, where she was noticed by her future editor. Another anecdote is that the animated trailer for the manga was made by the studio Gonzo. I get that people, including me, are wary about allowing Western comics here, but I think it is really a pity about this manga and some others.

@Kyragos So while a borderline case, officially it's still a western publication. An OEL, if you will. Some of the OEL titles from the 00's were also drawn by japanese/korean artists.

This website is a steaming pile of elitism. So many choices that make this website less and less useful.
