So after watching the first 3 episodes I decided to read the Manga.
I've read about 30 or so chapters and it certainly is better than the anime adaptation.

What I've noticed is that the manga simply consists of VERY short stories, that don't link up in any way.
Whereas the anime took multiple of these stories (from my best guess it's about 5 to 10 per episode) and tried to make each episode its own coherent storyline.

I think that was a mistake.
In my opinion it would have been better if they made it more like nichijou, where each episode is just a collection of skits, that aren't necessarily connected to each other.

What do you guys think?
Where does the Anime fail and succeed as an adaptation?
Would love to hear your opinions <3

Nice! I was hoping you would check it out at some point, I haven't seen any other manga impressions from (formerly) anime-only people.

The manga starts off as just a few pages per chapter, it isn't until about ch 16 that it gets up to 10 pages per chapter. The early parts of the manga (ch 4-17) are mostly just short one-off stories from the time they dated as 1st years, but some chapters have a continuation. There's more connected chapters once they start their 2nd year, but there's also a good amount of random stories in-between, like dates or just them hanging out as friends. There's quite a few longer interconnected stories in the manga, they just might be broken up by a chapter in-between, but it's not all random stories.

Now, I don't think it's working at all to try and extend and stitch together these early, shorter stories into a more coherent narrative. It all feels way too simplistic and awkward, they aren't succeeding at fleshing this out into a narrative. The first 3 chapters are only loosely connected bits that relate to school, the walk there, a classroom scene, and the walk home, that's it. They changed a bunch of stuff to make half an episode out of this, and then tossed the bowling scene into the middle. The stuff in ch 1-17, minus ch 6, and 6.1, are 1st year events, but are now changed to being 2nd year events.

Just look at how differently Izumi is portrayed as well, you aren't bombarded by his bad luck like you are in the anime, and you have a lot of early chapters of cute interactions and development between the leads, including some decent character growth as well, to get more comfortable with their characters and unique relationship. The few scenes that are covered in both mediums are easily more natural in the manga, I'm not sure if it's the dialogue, pacing, VA's, etc. that are the issue, but I can say for certain that Izumi's VA is not helping.

Oh, and at least for me, the art style feels generic/uninteresting, and the eyes are just weird. I like how animated/colorful some scenes are, but that's it.

They're all 10+ pages from ch 16 onward, but it's definitely less than 15 pages for all of the chapters in the manga so far.

I read the first 4 volumes a year ago and I agree. But I think the anime as an anime is still good, I’m so happy that it’s adapted. If the anime is at least good when it finishes airing, then I’m happy. Idc about 1:1 adaptations.
The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10

Manga is definitely 100x Better than anime, the anime also lacks the coolness which Shikimori gives and the anime also makes izumi looks like a pathetic loser

I forgot to mention that, Shikimori's cute/cool expressions are top tier in the manga, the cool expressions in the anime are lackluster.

idk but I think they made Izumi worse in the anime.
I don't say that he look that pathetic but he seems so miserable compares with him in the manga.
Shikimori appearance look cooler in the manga too.
(Still, I think the anime can still be better with that amazing art showed in the OP)
nice

Yeah, I definetly don't regret picking up the manga. Have been enjoying it so far :)
I still have a little bit of hope for the anime though. I think the last episode wasn't as disastrous as the first two.

I think I'll be able to enjoy the dub version if I just view the show more like a standalone. It's really off-putting to me how formal the dialogue is in the sub, and Izumi's VA just makes everything worse. Even Deku (dub VA) sounds like a chad compared to whatever the fuck is wrong with Izumi in the sub.

So... I caved in and started to read the manga and by volume 5 I think the directors of anime really screwed this one up. I understand the hype readers were getting about and the frustration when it didn't pay off.

First, characters are the same but... feel different? Shikimori is cute, insecure and jelous, her coolness is more incidental and somehow doesn't feel as forced. Neither is her presence overbearing and suffocating, like i feel in the anime. She is "too good at everything", but these moments are paced way better in the manga.

Izumi's bad luck also isn't as overbearing. He still is a bit of a pussy and an airhead, but what completely saves it for me is that manga is acknowleging that this part of the story is a bit extreme case of suspension of disbelief, with his friends constantly jest him by making pretty much the same comments the fanbase is. It's stupid and manga knows it. But I also think that as volumes go, he gets more clumsy and airheaded instead of pure bad luck jinx of the beginning and I think I can enjoy him more as such.

Another thing, I think that those first 2-4 paged unconnected chapters of first volumes were absolutely bad idea to adopt as a whole starter episode. These ARE one dimensional with every one finishing with "she is CUTE", but once the arcs get longer things get substantially better. I feel those shorts are filler, intro/post credits type of material and the meat of the story is school life with friends and their family.

Tl;DR: I think director picked and/or reinforced wrong ideas/parts of the manga and paced them "too literaly", in a way that might have worked for manga, but absolutely doesn't work for a tv show. Plus, as a cherry on top, Izumi VA doesn't fit him at all.

I have no idea. Maybe it's not even voice, just the direction of voice acting.
I find him way to soft and "whiny". They make him sound way too girly, which I feel he's not in the manga.

He's too "uwu", god forbid :D

It's the perfect voice for this anime version of Izumi, since that seems to be what the showrunners are aiming for, but I have no idea why.
