i mean, it's still airing. the score tends to drop with time.

Scores drop with time. And plus, this is kyoani’s first anime in 3 years I think. One of the “no season 2” anime got a season 2 and a studio is returning, the scores are gonna be high.

Hype is a big factor, right? People who've been looking forward to this since season one ended are really excited and rate it highly because it's the fulfillment of their excitement, I imagine. I vocally prefer season one, but I think lots of people get hyped up or pumped for more of the thing they liked and rate accordingly.

Recency bias. And the fact that the people who are even watching and rating this season are people who enjoyed the first season and were all hyped to watch this season.

It's still ongoing, and it's been more than 4 years since the first season came out,so comparing both scores isn't fair

I mean every episodes were good and since we got to know the characters from s1,in this season we saw a lot of character interactions which made it even better like with elma and tohru,Kobayashi and kanna and I really liked illulu too so makes for a great sequel and everyone had their screentime which I am satisfied

If it's not significantly worse (e.g. like Psycho Pass), a second season of anything will have a higher score than the first season, because the people who didn't like the first season as much and scored it lower are probably not going to stick around for the second season. This way, the second season automatically receives more scores from people who would probably score it higher anyway, and so the overall score is higher.

(Conversely, a second season of anything is probably going to have fewer members than a first season, because only people who liked the first season enough are going to stick around.)

As other people have pointed out, recency bias is probably a factor, too.

1. Sequel effect
2. Recency bias
3. Even better animation
4. More dynamic storytelling
5. Better direction (to me)
6. Goes deeper into dragons and their lore
7. Kyoani returns in style

Yeah, that's it. Gave S1 a 7/10. This will definitely receive at least a 8/10 from me.

A lot of people are saying “recency bias” or “sequel effect”, but I honestly think it’s just better. This season has been perfect so far imo

You didn't have to make 4 different posts for that. Both seasons are equally good. The reason why season 2 has almost a half a point raise in score is mainly because of the sequel effect and the fact that it's still airing.

Also the score is completely deserved imo in case you're thinking that I'm hating on the show or something.

This season tackled a lot more human aspects and pretty heavy aswell, I remember ep 5 made me cry somewhere in the 4:50minute mark because it took a relevant situation that Elma mentioned seriously, and I thought I wish they do this again, and they fucking did, many emotions were shown with character's and shows why they act that way since season 1, it may have took a while for season 2 but GOD DAMN it do be looking real nice.
Hhhmmmmmm.......

There's much more substance to this season than the previous one. The previous season had us all seeing and being introduced to the dragons. The second season emphasizes more on how they've grown in terms of mindset and relationships between each other. Well, all that aside,it's mostly due to the hype surrounding the sequel and well,as y'all know "𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕊𝕖𝕢𝕦𝕖𝕝 𝔼𝕗𝕗𝕖𝕔𝕥." But I do believe this was a mega upgrade from the nice intro we got in the form of season 1.

the people that didnt like the first season would've given it a low score and ignored this one, its just the fans left to rate the show, hence the higher rating

Aside from the easy answer of sequel effect, I think that season 2 is serving as a setup season of sorts.
Season 1 focused a lot on Tohru’s character growth and acclimation to the world, growing alongside Kobayashi. Throw in a handful of the world’s greatest Loli and bang! success!
Season 2 has introduced a new character while the story bounces around more as each character receives more character growth (I.e. Shouta, Ilulu, Elma) which lets us learn more but it doesn’t flow as well as season 1

I think it is marginally better. The 1st season had alot of wholesome skit humor which I loved.
The 2nd season tho, OMG it's so good. It still carries the wholesome humor from the 1st while adding crazy beautiful action scenes(Tohru & Elma) and LORE(the latest ep was fantastic)
GIVE ME MORE LORE!!

In addition to the above comments which I mostly agree, I also think people are a little soft on KyoAni's new works because of the incident two years ago.

It's ALWAYS the number of viewers.

And, to be honest, this applies to every anime, movie, game, youtube videos that are split in parts...

The first season/part always has THE MOST views; consequently there are more people who give both high and low scores.

Let's take this show for instance:

Season 1 has an astounding: Members 958,408 (561,707 users gave score)

Season 2 however: Members 314,632 (55,485 users gave score)

Numbers don't lie. The show is still popular but nearly 3 times more people have seen the first season (or added it to their list), and about 10 times more people have given score to season 1 in comparison to season 2, which is not yet over. Despite that, the difference in numbers is already significant. We should also consider that people who didn't like season 1, would likely not care about season 2, so the low score they gave to season 1 will no longer be affecting season 2 score. On the other side, you have plenty of people who loved season 1, so they'll highly likely love season 2 too, THUS:

season 2 will have more high-scores than low-scores; thus, season 2 will always leave an impression of being a "better" season in comparison. Of course, this doesn't apply to all shows.
