Thoughts on the English Dub?

As of now there are two episodes out for the English dub.

I think the dub performances are fine, and I like some of the choices the performers made, but as someone who watched the sub and was looking forward to the dub I have to disagree with some of the script choices. I usually like it when dubs add their own flair, especially with comedy since the jokes sometimes don't translate, but here they are turning earnest lines into new jokes and in many cases it undercuts the characters which weakens the overall effect.

The basic premise of the show, at least at the beginning, is that you have these tropes of scary monsters, an all powerful demon lord, and a valiant hero, all undercut by the antics of the sleepy princess. But the dub script often has those characters saying goofy things right away, which undercuts them right out of the gate and makes everything silly. I'm not saying it's all bad, and I understand when they do that to juice up a bad script, but this show was very good to begin and I think a little restraint would have worked better.

Also, in the sub when the princess is drifting off to sleep she does this sighing "Syaaaa" as she drifts off. It was a super adorable button at the end of each act. In the dub those shots have her mumble a new phrase or something each time and it just doesn't work as well for me. It's almost like removing the character's catchphrase.

To be honest I prefer the subs of Maoujou de Oyasumi rather than the dubs because IMO the dubs don't fit the character as well as the JP Voices.

I personally like the dub myself. It's cute and fun in its own goofy way.
