Gurl no... No it is not... I think making something like Monster as a work of fiction is WAAAAY more interesting than if it were based on a true story

The last city they end up in isn't a real city. The mangaka never stepped foot in Germany. So on and so forth.

There is a point where they were in a city close to where I live, though, and go to for work often! Ebbelwoi Ebbelwoi, Hessen stronk! Gießen was an odd choice for the area, though. Ugly city. Lots of big, grey buildings and dipshit uni kids. Wetzlar would've been cooler, it's the next city by Gießen. Fachwerkstraße architecture. Super old and beautiful city. Actually has some nature around it, unlike Gießen, which would've fit the plot of when Herr Doktor was in the area.

Don't listen to Ondore's lies, OP.

Monster is based on a true story.

It all really happened.

Johan is still out there.

Hide yo aunts, hide yo uncles.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

True story? No. unless there were some inspirations from real life that Urasawa used. Have you tried finding his interviews on Monster? Maybe they shed light on the background of the manga

I know monster has really great writing and all but there's no way it is based on real story. Urasawa's a master story teller.

I mean ok, but I didn't spoil anything

Post was talking about a real life location you've probably never heard of and how it looks in real life, and comparing it negatively to another real life location and how that location looks in real life

I understand what you mean, the story is realistic and in addition the characters feel like real people. There have been many stories with similar plots involving around a serial killer and some have been based on a true story. In this case it isn't as there hasn't been any information about it being based on real life events.

Yes, it's based on a true story but in contradiction to the anime the real life incident didn't take place in Germany. It actually happened in a Manga from Japan😳. Surprised!! So was I as the MC was also from Japan.

The experiment really happened, I'm from Prague but I'm not a specialist in these underground secret organisations but the nazi Eugenics isn't a secret thing anymore , for a lot of people it's common knowledge even though it was hidden back then throughout socialism. I also wonder how much truth there is to the details since it doesn't seem too far off, of course some things like tenma saving Johan and the whole thing is a storytelling tool I wouldn't say that the basis would be stretching minor truths. There were crazy organizations and especially in this case brainwashing children was something that happened. And for the sake to make perfect soldiers that would assist res socialistic ideals. Even now I meet old people that are Nazi minded and shi... That Hitler was a great man. Repulsive as it is when I watched the anime I went to the square and tried to find the "Čedok" bridge and the three frogs but nobody could tell me if there ever was such a hanger.
I tried looking in the files of people that were a part of the experiments and if any of them were a writer and looked at how the names could've been changed for the manga but its way more complicated irl.

Yes, it was based on Hitler's history. He was saved by a Japanese doctor during the first world war.
Hitler lost one of his balls in the process, that's why he became a monster.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

The author was inspired by the 1963 series 'The Fugitive' (which would later be made into a movie with Harrison Ford in 1993), which, despite a popular myth, was not based on any real life events. So no, it is not.
