Moments ago it occurred to me that in the anime I've watched to date, I couldn't recall a single instance of an anime character with braces. Does such a thing exist?

(To clarify, I'm referring to orthodontic braces, not suspenders.)

Huh. Now that you mention it, very few have teeth.

Only character that I remember to wear braces is Lucy from Bungou Stray Dogs.

Strangely, I think the braces actually make her more charming.

Yup, she is the only one I can think of too. Braces are rarely seen in anime for some reason.

In Japan braces are considered to be something one would get later in life (like 20 or so) rather than in middle school like in the US so there isn't much need to have them. They're also not particularly easy to animate so unless they're related to the character's personality then there isn't much point in bothering with them.

Hanako from Zetman has braces. Marimo from Teekyuu gets braces in a single episode to fix her broken teeth and they're gone the following episode (typical Teekyuu). I think a lot of anime girls would look quite cute with braces, but there's not much reason for them to have them.

A much more common instance of imperfect teeth in anime is yaeba (cute fangs). Japanese people don't really care as much about straight teeth as Americans do. Some will even get surgery to give them fangs.

I think braces aren´t that common in Japan. I´ve heard they find slightly crooked teeth more charming.

And coincidentally, Lucy is a north-american character. It fits her, though she removes it after BSD first season.
