With Taichi and Arata being my two favourite characters in the series, I've always wondered why they are ranked below Chihaya in favourites on MAL. However, in an official Top 25 Popularity Poll conducted in Japan 6 months ago, the 3 mains were ranked in the following order:

First Place - Mashima Taichi, 11307 votes
Second Place - Wataya Arata, 5639 votes
Third Place - Ayase, Chihaya, 756 votes

I thought it was just a difference in preferences for the Western audience but I then realised that all the English popularity polls online have Taichi and Arata dominating first and second place respectively.

Can anyone explain why the popularity of these characters differ so drastically on MAL?

Maybe because the sites you visited were likely Chihayafuru-specific sites? Fan sites, fan forums, the series-related sites or threads, official or not. The series is billed as "shoujo" , esp. the manga & its drawing style, therefore many of the fans with big enough love for the series to visit the specific sites, are likely girls, and girls likely pick male charas in popularity polls.

But the anime (and to some extent also the live-action movies), have more "gender-neutral" style, therefore watched by more gender and age-balanced audiences than the manga readers; teenagers, adults, old, children, girls, boys, men, women. Therefore its not unusual to find more ppl liked the protagonist Chihaya in polls conducted by more "neutral" or "diverse" sites.

That is just my opinion. Cheers ~

It's an interesting take on the subject but what I find interesting is that even though MAL users are predominantly male (the ratio is somewhere around 60M:40F I think), the top 20 favourite characters on MAL are all male except Makise Kurisu, Rem and Gasai Yuno (and I think we can agree that Chihaya is nothing like the other 3). I guess this is just difficult for me to accept since Arata and Taichi are much better characters imo and their lack of support on MAL baffles me :P
But take a look at the poll that was also conducted on MAL, Taichi is first by a large margin (despite the small sample size).

I think it's cause it's demographic is mainly female. Most females like guys. The end. And that it's a lot more popular in Japan than it is in the west. Most likely because karuta is a traditional Japanese game.

Either way, since this show is getting a second season after six years I hope my beloved Magi can get the same.
