I'm searching for a good horror anime and it's definitely starting to frustrate me. I'm more interested by tension than scarejumps and a scary atmosphere than gore, tho good old 80's/90's body horror can do if the animation is sexy. However, stuff tagged "horror" like Elfen Lied wich only relies on shock and torture porn doesn't interest me at all.

Perfect Blue, the scary eps of Aria or the first ones of Devilman Lady are what I'd consider scary stuff. Or something like Vampire Princess Miyu, maybe.

Thanks for your suggestions, MALers <3

Thanks for the reccs, I'll guees I'll start with Mermaid Forest (tho probably the OVA and Scar first), and Boogiepop Phantom looks really cool, can't believe I forgot to put it in my PTW already (^:

Considering that the top anime on that page looks exactly like what I'm trying to avoid (Parasyte and EL, ew), heh. As you can guess, I tried that already. I looked by date too, and score.

edit: Holy shit a second "check the horror genre" comment.

I highly, highly recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. It does have a bit of gore, but it's more of a mystery/psychological thriller in the horror genre. You should also try Another, which is also a mystery/thriller type with a bit of gore. I also second watching Shiki like others have recommended. :)

I would recommend Uzumaki, Gyo or anything Junji Ito. They don't resort to jump scares and are genuinely terrifying. Tokyo Ghoul's manga is also pretty good but it is really gory. Don't watch it's anime form though. Fuan no Tane by Masaaki Nakayama is another good one. Dragon Head is also really good. Tokyo Red Hood is also Horror, but it is really disturbing. It is about a girl and the different sex acts she partakes in. When they Cry and Corpse Party I guess would work.

Instead of double posting edit your previous post.

Yeah just did that. Makes more sense that way anyways.

Not really an important piece of japanese animation, but I'll add Kagewani.

I noticed you didn't check Ayakashi:japanese classic horror tales. Also, Ghost Hunt has a few interesting paranormal investigation cases (the anime only adapting a few of the cases, the red line is never fully explored but you watch this mainly for the supernatural "agents" aspect).

Of course, the Rumiko Takahashi's mermaid OAVs are great choices. By Takahashi too: War
au Hyôteki
was made into an OAV around the same period.

Not sure if Call me tonight would work, it's funny though.

PS: if you aren't scared off by ridiculous things, there is Mayoiga. A somehow revered show from the past year (I don't understand why).

Thanks for your suggestions. Shiki long good, but the person I wanna watch those shows with saw (and liked) it already. maybe later!

@Rei366 Hahaha, thanks. Added Warau Hyôteki too yesterday while browsing the horror pages. I guess Rumiko is my best bet for now :'^)
Somehow I keep forgetting about Ayakashi. I'll probably add it to my list. Thx!
Kagewani looks like it'd work. Saw Call me Tonight, but dunno with those tags... Horror, Sci-fi, Romance, Comedy? (^:

@MysteriousHo_Oh1 Thx for the reccs, but I plan to watch shows with someone. She read and liked some of your suggestions already tho, and I'll probably check them at some point :3

Kagewani does work for most of its episodes (it changes toward its end but can still be a bit frightening). Check the first few episodes (for free on Crunchyroll), it won't cost you a lot of time.
Call Me Tonight is scifi ?o_O It's a body horror short story with a rather light tone (here, romance is automatically added to anything where a couple seems to blossom ^^").

Flying over ANN, my eyes met the names of Boogiepop Phantom (it's a cross-media franchise with a TV and a light-novel series along a movie) that I forgot to cite previously, and a few I didn't know about:
- kosetsu hyaku monogatari:
An Edo-era pop mystery writer chasing down the origins of famous ghost stories for his book, the Hundred Stories. Just like Scooby-Doo—all you need to do is replace the timid dog with a timid author and the van full of hippies with a trio of monstrous supernatural executioners, who force evildoers to face karmic justice before sending them to the afterlife.
In one story, a nobleman's been dumping corpses at the crossroads.

- maybe this one,
- the 2008 short adaptation of Hakaba Kitarô, the original form of Gegege.

More to come. Or not.

edit @Clebardman Not a reason to skip the very short Kagewani series 1!! XC

Sekai no yami zukan? It's a paranormal/scifi anthology, but it is mostly badly narrated (voice- AND suspense-wise).

Still, you're left with diaporamas made of nice pictures drawn in a different style each episode:

It's funny in a certain way.

@Weeazy He just watched Yami Shibai. As for the videogame and novel adaptations:

@Rei366 @Weeazy Thx for the suggestions again, I was way too banned to answer tho (^':. Those illustrations look good :3

Regarding Another and Corpse Party... TBH, seeing how these shows and Higurashi are bundled with EL and Mirai Nikki in suggestions, I'm trying to avoid them. If I'm looking for gore, I prefer late 80's/early 90's shows.

Yami Shibai was pretty good for the modest goal it was aiming for, tho s4 sucked hard. I hope s5 fixes that :c

I would still consider Corpse Party, its really gory, but its your decision whether to watch it or not.

I don't know why you're dismissing Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, but it's scary just in the way you're looking for. It's the suspense and the creepiness that makes the show, not jump scares. And gore has nothing to do with why Higurashi is scary either. Honestly, just watch the first 4 episodes. It's a whole arc that will give you a good idea of what the show is about and if it works for you. I watched 5 episodes with my wife, and even though it's one of the best anime I've seen (at doing its job), we're both too creeped out and are currently procrastinating finishing it. :D I can't imagine why a horror fan wouldn't like it though, let alone completely let it fly under his radar.

Another is probably the closest you'd get to a true horror anime. There is some gore but it has a lot of the "horror movie" themes and tropes.

You might also like Mouryou no Hako, Texhnolyze or Shigurui. They aren't "Horror" per se but you do get that same tense feeling watching those.

@Th334 I appreciate the suggestion but tbh I looked into the three that are mentionned (Higurashi, Another and Corpse party) really early because they're the most popular entries in the database under the horror tag, and I'm pretty sure by now that I'm not gonna enjoy them that much. There's a pattern of moe highschool girls+post Elfen Lied gore that I just don't like, and the reccomendations for these shows or reviews like:
"Elfen Lied, Higurashi, Another think you know gore?
I introduce Corpse Party"
don't exactly help. As I said, I find stuff like the galactic railroad episode in Aria or the Alien episode in Cowboy Bebop infinitely more frightening.

@Clebardman I played the game last year from time to time and it's more about being oppressed until you jump out of scare thanks to some stupid ghost child who trapped/aggressed/killed your comrades/you/whatever was that pile of ??? you just found, rather than what you want. Still funny to consume time when I couldn't sleep.

Ghost Hunt could be fine, some paranormal investigation cases seemed okay to me and the anime doesn't boast itself as anything special. But the background "red line" is cut short at the end of the show because it only adapted a few cases of the novels series.
Also, I just stumbled upon an "interesting" opinion about it yesterday:

(the video is subtitled, no need to hear it normally)

I don't see Shinsekai Yori on your list. so i'd rec that.

also consider:

- Petshop of Horrors
- Kagewani
- Shiki

and seeing that you've seen devilman lady and have devilman in your ptw, you might as well watch Amon: The Apocalypse of Devilman too.

Well, I do not consider Perfect Blue as a horror anime, although it does have its touches, but based on the terror you are looking for, I can recommend these:

- Hell Girl
- Blood +
- Another
- Paranoia Agent
- School live (A little different)
- Monster

I would also recommend Dead Space Downfall, despite not being '' anime '' in the strict sense of the word, it is a very good animated horror movie with anime style.
