I don't really consider myself an otaku. Apart from a Totoro-themed shoulder bag and few manga books, I haven't bought anything anime themed stuff, although I propably would buy some series on dvd if I could get those in my country.

Not that I'd be ashamed if I were one. I've always thought that if your friends can't accept you for what you are, they are not your friends. Not sure if being an otaku is that much to be proud of, but I see no need to hide it even if I were.

I had no idea what the word meant...then I googled it....and in the images there was this fat asian guy in a blue anime dress (WTF!?!...gross). So everytime I hear or see the word otaku, that image is in my head... :(

from what I understand, otaku is a reference to ones "honorable house", apparently people who never leave their house... just looking at lolicon and the like all day... :P

This. Being proud of something and not being ashamed of it are completely different things. I'm not ashamed of being an anime fan or otaku or whatever the hell you wanna call it. I'm certainly not proud of it though. I'm not proud of watching anime or buying anime merchandise even though I love doing both.

I feel like the only two anime-related things I can be proud of is cosplaying and being the Vice President of the anime club at my college.
+1 to that

Can't really relate... not really an Otaku. Sure, I watch quite a lot, but I don't see the point in buying so much of the merchandise. I also usually tend to not tell people that watching anime is one of my hobbies... get a better response when I say guitar, lol XD

I would consider myself otaku since i have a rather large collection of blu-ray/dvds and manga. I also spent a large amount of money on PVC Figures. (think i have 200 last i counted) But as far as putting shit on my wall, it used to be otaku level (wall covered in posters) but i now have since matured a little bit since then and the only thing anie on my wall are my framed posters of Haruhi no Yuutsu (autographed by aya hirano and co.) and a framed JP poster of Rental Magica since it looks damn good in my room. I do name my hard drives after anie characters and have "anime" desktop backgrounds (check out my works on post your desktop v2) but the backgrounds are usually subtle and consist of anime background art instead of an actual character.

i am a proud otaku and y? y not lets face it reality sucks. now everyone i ask their one goal is to get married well its great if u can find someone u can spend the rest of ur life happily with but wat if u cant as soon as u get married u have just cast a curse on urself this curse will begin after 3 years now the first 3 years is the most happiest time of ur life u go home form work around like 6 and ur wife is home waiting for u and she'll say things like "welcome home honey do u want a bath or dinner first" and u know wat she really wants since she is probably wearing nothing but an apron well anyways this is the first 3 years after marriage but after this 3 years its when u will pay the price u will probably come home at something like 11 or 12 drunk and ur wife will probably be still waiting for u for dinner then u might hit her because ur too drunk then she'll call the police and ur have to spend some time in a cell then she'll grow tired of u and u'll grow tired of her and u both want a divorce but maybe u cant because u'll already have a kid until finally u just cant stand her anymore and ur forced the break up and ur have to say to ur kid "who do u want to live with ur mommy or ur daddy" or it could be the other way around where she breaks up with u and ur like probably in ur 30s or 40s or even 50s at that time but ur taste in woman is still probably the fresh 18 years old ones and... ill let u guys use ur imaginations of wats going to happen or another possibility is u become so emotionally scared for the divorce that u go out at night and slice the throats of women u see. so instead of all this happening i could just get a job rent a room lock myself in it turn off all the lights and watch anime (or read manga) play video games watch porn and hang out with friends sometimes and guys remember this we do not need woman woman needs us!!!

No. There's nothing that being an otaku entails that one should be proud of. I mean otakuism is basically a type insanity, and if you're proud of being insane you're probably a dumbfuck teenager, or really. On the flip side though being an otaku precludes almost total to complete shamelessness. As such even though I'm not proud of myself, in this case, I'm not ashamed of myself either.

Considering a good majority of people on MAL are pretentious morons, I thought this would have generated abit more of drama.

Fact of the matter is that there is WAY too many judge-mental people out there these days and the point I was trying to get across was that if people want to be the way that they are, if it doesn't cause harm to others why try to say "oh its bad to do this" or "that aint cool" just leave them to it for christ sake.
There's enough unhappiness in the world today as it is.

HOW'S THAT FOR POETRY.

Haha.. I am so no into anime like that at all. An otaku? What does that even mean? ._. Please, forgive me my lack of knowledge of anime words. I am only watching several animes, and not hardcore or anything like that at all. :P Is it a collector of anime goodies?

If that would be the case, I wouldn't say it would be bad, since people can collect whatever they want and feel proud of it. Although, I don't think thats the definition of an otaku, right? ._. Can someone kindly explain it to me, I am sorry if it's been explained before.

I wouldn't know really, because I am not an otaku. I dont have animeposters, I dont buy DVD's, I dont buy manga, I dont buy anything anime/manga at all, I dont go to conventions. I dont really do anything that could tie Japan, except watch anime and read manga when I want to.

And about the short skirts. Well, every single male in High School would probably want to have such a dress-code. Anime fan or not.

Being Otaku is hard for me,my classmates sometimes tease me,most of the time I'm hiding my anime items from them. There are times that I'm hiding my collection of anime dvd from my parents, because I know that they will get mad if they knew that I'm spending my allowance in that. But my room is filled with posters! heheh^^
When I'm at school I'm still relating reality from fantasy..example,I wish we have an Anime club in our campus,I wish we have a short skirt as a uniform,I wish we have a complete season here in Philippines and lots of more....I guess that just happens in the world of anime.

My question is really Being an Otaku needs to be proud of? why?

The real question is:

Because there's no such thing, and even if there were who's to say they wouldn't? Again you're conflating all otaku with wapanese, and maybe the more extreme Japanophiles.

If I thought of myself as an otaku, I would not be happy with that and I would be insulted if someone else called me that... I mean, maybe I do like anime, but I don't like to think of myself as an anxiety disorder ridden shut in with no job, and upon having a job all I do is blow my money on worthless memorabilia and fandoms and then go on about how cute little girls are. No, I'm not an Otaku.

Although, my girlfriend IS asian, barely legal, and collects Gundam models. So I've got a little bit of it in me MAYBE.

If I'm speaking english then hell yea I'm a proud Otaku with a whole new level of crazy every week

When I'm speaking japanese it's different 'cause Otaku 1. doesn't only mean anime/manga fan it means an over the top fanboy for something and 2. When you use it it's almost a discrimination

Makes ya think doesn't it
