I wanted to ask if the main storylines of the Manga and Light novels are similar. Or are they totally different?

I'm pretty sure the light novel is a side story
The manga is the original story for Fma

I've read only up to 3. The first one is a reversion of a few anime episodes from the original anime series, but the other two are different stories that you won't find anywhere (I assume the rest are that way).

They are side stories - more of the side stories from the first anime series wherein Ed and Al go around the world doing research on the Philosopher's Stone.
