Anyone else have this big problem with the animation style? (spoilers within)

So I recently watched this on Netflix, and while I have enjoyed the show and think it is an above average entry into it's genre, I have had a *really big* issue with the animation style and was wondering if anyone else did as well. Not really a gripe about the art style or the unnatural movements of the first episodes (IMO the studio became much more comfortable as the show progressed, resulting in more fluid and much improved animation quality, evident in s2), I am having a lot of trouble recognizing each character.

Specifically, all of the female characters seem to look incredibly similar, with the exception of certain hair styles. It definitely was the biggest negative impact on the show for me, I was having trouble remembering who was who, which created pretty big issues whenever someone died. I couldn't for the life of me remember which female character it was that turned into the main red mecha enemy, or which female character it was who became 'recreated/infected'.

For most of the first season, I thought the 3rd gendered 'girl' that had a crush on the MC was the original love interest until she showed up again later as a gauna clone (which I only figured out due to a flashback in the last couple episodes of S1). Did anyone else have this problem with the show?

I guess marathoning it on Netflix also exasperates this situation, whereas I might have remembered the characters more easily watching it week to week, but I don't have this problem with traditionally animated shows. Did anyone else have issues with this?

I actually watched it a few months ago a did not have issues with remembering who was who.
The animation itself was a big surprise for me at the start but I got used to it pretty fast.

So no I did not have any issues with any of the characters, or knowing who was who.

I really believe that animation is one of the strengths of anime. Perhaps with another style the battles would lose a lot of dynamism.
But well, it’s only my opinion! Hahaha

I really want to see the movie! 😱

I haven't finished the series yet, but I did have a similar issue. I could not tell the difference between Hoshijiro and Shinatose for the first three episodes. Perhaps this is purposeful since there are so many damn clones in the setting, but I think the character designs are quite poor in comparison with the other, much stronger, designs and visual elements in the series.

Completely agree with you here...but I don't think it's the anime's fault. Its more of the mangakka's style. In the manga you'll find it even harder to understand who's who because of the similar character designs. It really did take me away from totally enjoying this great work.
