You should be good to go.

There's (one?) direct character tie-in to the past entries, and plenty of homages/returning ideas, but it's essentially superficial/fanserviceish stuff - at least so far.

Do note that there's the possibility that the showrunners might surprise us by throwing in deeper connections/cameos/etc.

If you're interested in a small dip into Macross, then Frontier was the previous series, similarly essentially standalone, and probably the closest entry to Delta in presentation, style, music, and content.

Background:
A alien ship fall on earth
Humans fix the ship
Another alien group, zentraedi, thought that the humans were zentraedis enemy(because of that fellen ship)
Human vs Zentreadi fight
human-zentraedi peace through power culture, in form of 80s jpop song.
humans and zentraedi(those that encountered humans and was touched by culture anyway) move out, explore and colonize the galaxy
some had setteled down in a planet, like Ragna, or New Eden.

This is the background of Macross franchise, if you understand this you are good to go on any Macross serie.
The various series doesnt hav much connection with each other anyway, they are mostly self-contained, there are some small references etc but they dont really matter.

But if you do want to watch I say Zero, the badguys in Delta seems have something to do with the anti-UN group in Zero, not to mention statues that look like Zero's birdhuman, or their fixation with the "Wind" that were a important part of the Mayan native culture in Zero. It is only 5 episode and the fights looks quite good.

There is no Macross sequel that requires watching any other series except Dynamite 7.

It's my first Macross - anime and so far it's quite easy to understand.

Only thing I don't know is the origin of the Wintermeres(?).
Not sure if it plays a big role though.

Windamere have never appeared in older work before so no worries.

Like I said, all shows are mostly stand-alone, connections are few and sparse.

I honestly think the best way to watch Macross is in chronological order of release. Starting with SDF Macross, Macross Plus, Macross 7 (and ovas), Macross Zero, Macriss Frontier (and movie), and finally Macross. What's even more important is that between each series or even within each anime that you space it out and not marathon it. That way you get a really good sense of age that the Macross universe has since between each series is almost or at least a decade.

By watching it properly instead of skipping a series, you will recognize and understand references, homages and he way the anime is laid out. The first part of epsiode 2 for Macross Frontier is the same as the opening for Macross DYRL (SDF Macross movie version). Macross Delta does it also. Episode 7 was the first climax for Frontier so I also expected Delta to have it sonewhere there. It is interesting to note that Macross Delta is more similar to Macross 7 as Macross Frontier is to the original SDF Macross. Having watched all the series I probably can tell where the love triangle will end up. I really love Macross so much
