I saw the 1995 movie of Ghost in the shell, it felt like I was thrown in the middle of a story. Is there a anime/manga or movie that I should have seen before I saw the movie? It was really confusing.

You will get more background if you watch

then

It was ok to be thrown off by the movie, later titles provide more story and character development.

No, everything in the movie can be understood without contact with the rest of the franchise.

To the best of my knowledge, the '95 film was standalone. The only related work released was Innocence and that was a very loose sequel, which had almost nothing to do with the events from the original.
It was adapted from a manga but, not having read it myself, I don't know whether the book goes into any more details regarding the events than the film did.

The TV anime adaptations are an alternative setting, using only the main characters from the film, but with completely new plots.
That said, I don't think the film was particularly difficult to understand.

would disagree on you for this one, the movie provides most details in a rushed manner.

Are those movies about what happened before the 1995 movie? Also, which one of them should I watch first?

They're entirely separate continuities.

Thise are not movies, those are animated series based on the original idea

Would have to rewatch the movie to give you the list. Anyway that was my opinion, and my friends and family when they saw the movie.

Well, duh, you were. Not every story starts from 'the beginning', and they don't have to.

I felt like the movie could have been 20 or so minutes longer, and had less of those panoramic shots that just showed us different parts of the city with no dialogue for 5 minutes at a time. They could have spent the time giving us a little extra character development instead.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

This. Especially considering the rest of the anime franchise didn't even exist back when the movie came out.
I probably regret this post by now.

There's no requirement to watch anything else in the franchise before the 1995 movie. It's not the same continuity as the other entries in the franchise (Aside from its sequel, Innocence).

But I'd still recommend watching Stand Alone Complex and 2nd Gig for their own sake. You might find them easier to follow than the 1995 movie just because they have more time to flesh stuff out.
