I have to say this is one of the most miserable, depressing series I have ever watched.

The protagonist is depressing, the main antagonist is depressing.
the least depressing character in this entire show is a psycho path that murders little children for fun.

good lord dont even get me started on kariya.
why is this series considered good again? I guess if you like somewhat gorey tragedies then this is right up your alley. however its certainly not my cup of tea.
don't get me wrong the action was decent, but imo thats its only redeeming quality.

the tone was nothing like it was fate/stay or at least not how i remember it.
I might give ubw a try, but im a little hesitant now.

i watched part of Akame Ga Kill. Ill admit its pretty dark.
however the characters didnt seam as depressing. of course alot can happen after episode 7
(i believe thats where i left off)

googled that second one, and yeah seams like something i should stay way from.
dont get me wrong ive watched some pretty dark stuff before. Im just more of a happy ending kind of guy.

I have to agree with you Zero is pretty dark. I really enjoyed it but I could see how some people wouldn't like it. I wouldn't let Zero turn you off UBW though. UBW has a lighter tone to it than Zero, although there are certainly some tear jerking sad parts.

So... The show has only one redeeming quality... Because it's depressing?

Because the story is excellent, the writing is excellent, the characters are excellent, the animation is excellent, etc.

You just answered your own question as a matter of fact; it's not good in accordance to your personal tastes, but objectively, it's not just good, it is excellent.

The characters are nothing to write home about. They are puppets in a play without any real characterization beyond basic motives, because Fate/Zero IS a "play", a greek tragedy with characters bound by their destinations we know about from the start.

Unlike the main franchise, Zero is not character-focused. It is entirely focused onto building up to the fire.
