Like some have allready mentioned in the respective thread of the episode it features in:

Is this actually a thing?

Or is this just to please a ratings board (minors drinking), or a joke about doing so? Because if not, where can I get it, or how do I make it? I know how to make rice wine, but I wouldn't know how to get a similar quality without alcohol, because the fermentation process that is responsible for its taste, produces alcohol by definition.

I know this is very late (decided to watch it over again recently). I thought the same thing. They were probably drinking amazake (sweet sake), which is a little alcoholic but probably only as alcoholic as say kombucha is (less than 1% abv).

Ryoko is the fermenter/brewer of the group.

Well, i like to belive that it is some sort of alcoholic drink and they're all drunk.

We live in a world where drinking alcohol as a highschooler happens a lot and it isn't really a problem but i guess they gotta pretend like it's alcohol free for legal reasons or something.

Also i know that i'm replying to a 6 year old thread but I couldn't stop myself.
