For reference, an average college student reads at 450 words per minute.
Average “high level exec” = 575
Average college professor = 675
Speed readers = 1,500
World speed reading champion = 4,700

Average adult: 300 wpm

Mine is 480 words per minute. That is essentially one book page, considering each page contains 40 lines with 12 words each.

Too lazy to check as it makes no difference. Though interested in how much those speed readers understand and remember.

Is there an online test you can link?
I'm probably about average, I always feel like it takes me more than four hours to read 240 page books though maybe you slow down over time.

I'm more worried about college students level of cognition, not their speed.

Edit: A test would be more to prove what you're capable of, not what you actually do in general so I don't know if that would be all that helpful anyway. It really depends on the words too so it just seems like there is no reliable way of measuring this.

But I'm a fast reader, I guess.

one chapter per month maybe, unless it's a textbook for class and I need to know the material, then one chapter per week. I'm going to guess 100 words/minute here.

I definitely read quickly, I am always reading a book and no matter what language what movie or show I'm watching is in I watch it with subtitles, because I absorb the dialogue better with subtitles on, definitely forces quick reading. I never had it measured or anything.

I know how to speed read, or at least how it works and I can to an extent, but I'm not entirely successful and I don't pursue it really either. Speed reading is simply scanning lines of text and absorbing previous lines as you scan the next line. I have issues with speed reading, because if information I am absorbing is of interest to me and I ponder on it, I stop absorbing new information but I keep on scanning lines of text, and then I have to retrace my steps.

Reading out loud though without thinking about what I am saying, I can read out loud very quickly if I like using this method. I think most people can, they just don't think about how speed reading works, give it a shot.

I don't know, but I'll estimate it at 170 wpm. I don't speedread, and I don't believe in skipping over words like some people do when they read books and stuff.

In order for me to appreciate or enjoy anything, I have to take my time at it.

It really depends. If I'm skimming something or really engrossed in something I read around "1"000 wpm, but if not, it'll fall to around 600 wpm

Reading two words in a second isn't a bad thing if you understand the words and can piece together the context

Just did an online test and apparently I read at about 227 words per minute. I did however get an 100% on comprehension though, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

I feel like that's a scam to make money, everyone here could probably do the "700 wpm". They make you feel like you're superior to others so that you buy their product.

I can do speed reading but only if it's law related, which is my subject at uni, or any news on papers, anywhere amounts to 1000wpm, but then I'll forget it all and only retain very little if I don't jot down somewhere. Also the comprehension rate when I do speed reading is not that great, only 70-75% I guess.

I think you're over-estimating how well people remember words they read in that kind of speed. Spritz makes your brain work like a pipeline; you read the word, and with a slight delay it pops up in your head. I'd think it works better for memorization of texts you read through.

I could most likely read 600-700wpm, but I wouldn't remember shit of what I read at that speed. Especially not in course literature, though I doubt spritz would work better there. References kind of ruin the whole flow, anyway.

OT: Around 400wpm, I'd say.

I read at about 275 wpm. It's certainly within my ability to go higher than that, but I'm sure I'd process information much less efficiently if I did. Plus I'm easily distracted by tiny things.

I'd be willing to believe 700 wpm is reasonable for some people, but when you get higher than that, I don't imagine many people would be able to fully comprehend or remember a fraction of what they just read. Maybe I just think that because I'm jealous of their reading ability.

535 wpm when I'm reading through a text book. A little slower when I'm reading for leisure.

^It's the latter I believe, with 80% comprehension rate or higher, seeing that reading for leisure is at a lot slower pace.
