Now that I have caught up to all of the long shonens that are good and seasonal stuff as well, I finally want to check this series out. (Also havent seen Akira :P) whith all these movies arise, sac I have no idea where to start. Are these all sequels and prequels of the original or remasters or something. Super confused.

Just make sure you watch the original movie before Standalone Complex if you ask me, it lays the framework and is just really influential. It might be hard to watch it after the TV series and you don't want that.

The OVAs, movies, and TV series are all of their own continuity (barring the Solid State Society move, which goes with the TV series) so any where's fine. I'd recommend the 1st movie personally as a starting point. The 2nd movie sucks so don't worry about that one.

2.0 is just a remake of the 1st one (or so I've heard, never actually watched it). Ghost in the Shell 2 is the sequel I just brought up as not being good.

Are you sure you want to tho? The pretentiousness and techno-babble are strong in this one...

Ghost in the Shell has 2 Ghost in the Shell movies(one of them has a remastered version called 2.0) and then it has the Ghost In the Shell SAC series and a movie that comes after that called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society.

The Stand Alone Complex stuff have no story relation with the 2 movies i first mentioned. Still have same characters etc but follow different storyline etc. They are like an alternative universe.
You can say the TV series is a little closer to the manga than the movies.

Anyway. I suggest you check the SAC series first(for it's date it still looks quite good) because it's a little less convoluted and for a new guy in the franchise it will be easier to start getting into from there.

Then you can check the movies and you can choose if want to see the 1995 movie or 2.0 remaster. It's the same movie really. There isn't any major difference or anything just a little polishing and a few CGI scenes but don't imagine anything much so you are probably better watching the newer version if you like watching something as newer as possible.

After that come the second movie called Innocence(i have to admit as a fan of the franchise this wasn't so great).

Now besides all that there is also Ghost in the Shell:ARISE that was done recently which is 4 OVA movies of 1 hour. This is also independent from the other 2 and it will also get a TV series in April. Many feel it ain't as good though.

Other than that there is also a new Ghost in the Shell movie made this year.

We don't know if it's a continuation of the first two movies or a new start or even connected to SAC. We still have to wait and see. All we have is a small trailer.

Last we have Hollywood(Dreamworlks) making an adaptation and they already chose Scarlet Johanson for the main role. Let's see how this will go.

From the manga to TV series, to movies etc everything is in a slightly different universe.

In term of animation until now we have three different universes as you might say.

One universe is the universe created by the first movie and animation made(that doesn't make it more original or anything, actually SAC is closer to the manga but it was the first big hit) that in viewing order includes this:
http://myanimelist.net/anime/43/Ghost_in_the_Shell
http://myanimelist.net/anime/4672/Ghost_in_the_Shell_2.0(The same movie as the above 1995 movie really just remastered and with a few new Graphics)
http://myanimelist.net/anime/468/Ghost_in_the_Shell_2:_Innocence

Another universe is the Stand Alone Complex universe which in viewing order includes this:
http://myanimelist.net/anime/467/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1335/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex_-_Tachikoma_na_Hibi
http://myanimelist.net/anime/2449/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex_-_The_Laughing_Man(a movie summary of the first season)
http://myanimelist.net/anime/801/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex_2nd_GIG
http://myanimelist.net/anime/3485/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex_2nd_GIG_-_Tachikoma_na_Hibi
http://myanimelist.net/anime/2448/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex_2nd_GIG_-_Individual_Eleven(A movie summary of the second season)
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1566/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex_-_Solid_State_Society

Last we have the ARISE universe that was recently made and in viewing order includes this:
http://myanimelist.net/anime/17187/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Arise_-_Border:1_Ghost_Pain
http://myanimelist.net/anime/19191/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Arise_-_Border:2_Ghost_Whispers
http://myanimelist.net/anime/19193/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Arise_-_Border:3_Ghost_Tears
http://myanimelist.net/anime/19195/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Arise_-_Border:4_Ghost_Stands_Alone
http://myanimelist.net/anime/21575/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Arise_-_Logicoma_Specials
http://myanimelist.net/anime/29325/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Arise_%28TV%29(This is a TV series that will start in April so we don't know exactly what it will be but we assume that is probably a continuation of the first 4 Arise movies)

LAST! We have this:
http://myanimelist.net/anime/27411/Ghost_in_the_Shell_%282015%29
We have no idea whether this movie is gonna be a new universe or is based on some existing universe yet. We are still waiting for more news.

Oshii's 1995 film. ALWAYS.
Afterward, I would recommend Masamune's original Manga before or during Stand Alone Complex. The Manga and S.A.C are more alike in concept, I think. Only S.A.C (and even the film) lacks all of the great humor of the Manga. That's right, GiTS is actually humorous! But only the Manga.

Oshii's 1995 film, Masamune's Manga and Stand Alone Complex are really the GiTS essentials. I have GiTS 2: Innocence and the first three borders in the Arise series, but I'm not nearly as obsessed with those as I am with the 1995 film, Manga, S.A.C and even the PlayStation games (which are great!). Each form of GiTS media is an entirely different universe as previous comments have mentioned, which is great because every film, episode and comic has something new in store.

As for Akira, I personally don't care for it (blasphemy, I know), but the film is a must see, regardless.
