Agreed. Claymore was utter shit and definitely meant for kids.

WHAT? Claymore is awesome! DAMN OTHER'S OPINIONS! DAMN THEM! Seriously though for a Shounen series Claymore was more screwed up than anything out of Naruto, Bleach and the like.

Mnemosyne seems alright

Ergo Proxy
Wolf's Rain
Kurozuka
Basilisk
Darker than Black
Hell Girl
Eve (very new release only on web)
Mushishi
Red Garden
GANTZ
Claymore
Death Note
Seirei No Moribito

Then Mnemosyne is epic just because it has some yuri, big boobs, some sex scenes and violence? Come on... it is mature, but if we think about that, just watch some violent hentai.

And Clannad is epic.

Um...that would be teenage-kid anime.

There are tons of mature anime with themes like that. You just need to dig deeper.

I thought Claymore was really good. Its on the same level as Death Note. Not much comedy to it. I enjoyed Claymore, well the manga though.

LOL! Describing this anime as "adult" is like calling hentai "intelligent". This anime was more hentai than mature. The sexual imagery of white liquid oozing out of eggs and women enjoying the taste of it and acting dazed because of male vampires... It couldn't get any worse. Each episode just marked the spiral the anime was following downward.

Since I don't have anything to do or whatsoever...

WHAT! HOW DARE YOU INSULT CLANNAD!

xD I'm joking though. I just think you just don't like those genres and all so that's why you're bitching about it. There are mature people who don't like only action and horror, they like other stuff, too. And the romance aside, but I'm talking about some psychothriller for example or a very nice drama. Well maybe I'm still not old enough /just turned 18/ but I actually think I'll still like it even when I am 30. Fyi, in After Story, they are adults already and Tomoya is working and stuff. But that's not the point.

I can see where you're coming from though - sometimes I also think that students are way overused for those "adult" animes. I'm not complaining though. I'm not actually into all this blood thing that much so for now I can bare it. But yes, that thought crossed my mind :))

And btw, I loved Mnemosyne xD The yuri thing was a little too much fanservice, but then again - what's wrong about it? xD I know I wasn't complaining.

actually the correct genre is called Seinen

(n.) youth; young man.

Relatively uncommon in the west due to the emphasis on the male teen market, "seinen" is a demographic indicator for anime and manga aimed at a young adult male (college-aged) audience. As such, this kind of anime tends to be much more sophisticated than shounen anime. There are many of the same basic themes/subgenres as shounen but they are more psychological, satirical, violent, sexual, etc. In other words they are intended for a more mature audience.

There is a stronger focus on plot and consequently less focus on action. Characters and their interactions are also often more developped than in shounen anime. Because of this, seinen material is frequently misidentified as shoujo because it isn't very well known outside of Japan and because fans correctly recognize the character development, relationships and romance typical of shoujo. However, seinen anime usually deals with these subjects with a greater realism. Where shoujo will have an idealized love story, seinen will have more grays and uncertainties dealing with the practical give-and-take realities of a relationship.

Overall, seinen anime tends to be more strongly rooted in reality, with many incidental details added to heighten the sense of realism and even fantasy elements being subject to a strong "realistic" logic. Of course, it should be noted that those stylistic guidelines are a generalization of the genre and even an anime that has none of those characteristics can be classified as seinen if that was indeed the target audience. In fact, hentai (not including yaoi) is mostly targeted at the seinen demographic.

It should be noted that many of the works of anime most acclaimed for their depth and maturity (such as Patlabor, Maison Ikkoku and Ghost in the Shell) hail from the seinen genre.

(Anime News Network)

I wouldn't consider Mnemosyne 'deep' but it was a pretty entertaining series

Garden of Sinners:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/kara-no-kyoukai-the-garden-of-sinners

The series doesn't occur in chronological order, and the plot takes a while to get into. I don't know if I was ever really 'hooked' by it at any point. On the other hand the animation quality and music is unbelievable and deserves to be appreciate on its own. Its this element that kept me coming back, and I've never experienced that with any other anime/cartoon, or movie, except for watching Planet Earth on Blu-Ray (so imagine something that spectacular only with a good soundtrack).

At the same time the content is fundamentally humanist (despite the involvement if supernatural elements). I'd say it's deep but saying a series is 'deep' suggests some sort of profundity it brings to light that otherwise might be neglected. This show is rather a substantive portrayal of fundamental elements of human existence with which we're all familiar, and simply gives us something like a better understanding of these. This series is better described as sublime than deep.

I'm shocked this hasn't been mentioned yet, particularly since this thread got started 3 years ago and is the fourth hit on google for "top anime for adults".

As you can no doubt tell by looking at my anime favoirites, I ooze manly maturity. There is no greater man than I, on MAL.

That said, I got bored and on-holded Missnose fairly sharpish. It's just lesbians x S&M x violence. The characterisation / psychological examination aspects just aren't there.

Graphic violence or sex alone doesn't make something mature. GTO has FAR more depth than many seinen works because of its characters, and it was serialised in a shounen magazine.

QFT

School Days features an all teenage cast with a..not so happy theme and even sadder ending (Just watch it. Not gonna spoil it here)

Others that are similar include (others mentioned some but not at once)

Kimi No Gozumu Eien
Gantz
Myself; Yourself
The Higurashi series
Rahxephon (?)
NGE (?)

I might be pushing it when I say Rahxephon and NGE, especially Rahxephon since it's my favorite show of all time.

Is anyone going to write an anime that would stand up to Ghost in the Shell, Kino no tabi or Mushishi? I think not. That generation is sitting on the front porch and writing their memories fueled by cold leftovers on a plate in the fringe. Just as Hayao Miyazaki is 2 feet in the grave.

Does anyone in this forum even know what I'm talking about? Yea see I guess those guys were doomed from the start.

This is not mature. Seeing naked people and mutilation is not mature. If you are a horny 14 year old edgelord who thinks he's very intelligent and mature for his age and has finally figured everything in life, maybe then it's mature and probably "deep" too. I could have watched it in 2008 had I known about it, when I was 15-16 and probably my opinion would have been different, but watching it for the first time a few days ago, my opinion of it is pretty low.

If you take out the naked people and the mutilation/torture, you're left with a very thin and mediocre plot and the characters and their personalities are very shallow and one-dimensional. It's 6 40-minute episodes, but it can easily be seen as a 12-episode anime instead.

For the first few episodes you don't really understand much, but by the end you finally get the whole picture and boy is it a really dumb as f*ck picture... There are these immortal women who become like this if a Time Fruit passes through them, but men don't become immortal, they become "angels" for a while and want to have sex with the immortal women and kill them and that's what the immortal women want too. Then there is this guardian of the Ygdrassil tree, the last guardian was OK, but the current one is some maniacal hermaphrodite weirdo who wants to rule over the world forever. This is really the stupidest plot ever and the happy ending really devaluates it completely.

I really wanted to watch the anime, because I thought it may actually be something "mature" and "deep", but it's just like someone in the reviews described it as - torture porn. It's pretty lame, shallow and cliche. I wasted my time watching it, but I'm glad I did, because it wasn't very long and now I know it's pretty much a POS.

I gave it 5/10. If the rating system was more accurate, I'd give it 5.5/10, but I wouldn't give it 6/10 under the current system, because it would be too generous and untrue.
