This is just my personal opinion, and I wanted to hear what others that watched this show thinks.

The thing that I love about LOGH the most is that how it portrays the two different political factions fairly, without any Card Carrying Villains who just act evil because they are simply bad people. And that both autocracy and democracy were shown to have their flaws and advantages, with heros and villains on both side... Except for Terranism.

I just find the entire portrayal of Terranism to be the absolutely weakest point of the series for me, especially considering how well balanced the Alliance and the Empire were portrayed.

(I am not trying to start a political debate here, I am just namely examples using real world organizations)

Terranism could have been an interesting examination of the role that religion plays in society, especially in times of war. They could have been like Hezbollah IN SPACE, in that they gain so much support because they stepped in to offer social aid and support while war-torn governments failed to do so. Or the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom IN SPACE, in that it managed to gain so much popular support because of the hardship that common people had to suffer due to continuous war and state failure, and a charismatic managed to step in to give them hope.

Heck. Even if they were more like Melisandre from Game of Thrones, the Imperium of Man from Warhammer 40K, or the Master from Fallout would have been an improvement. In that they might be doing evil and brutal acts, but they genuinely (and perhaps actually) saving the world from a much greater threat.

But instead, what we got was a bunch or insane and drugged up madman who commits mass suicides, while having crazy looking eyes, or clergies who doesn't actually seem to believe in what they are doing and are only in it for the power (and have an evil laugh like they are a bunch of children's cartoon villains). With not even a single low ranking member that is shown to be even remotely nice or redeemable.

Perhaps they were explored much more in the original novels, but as someone that only watch the anime, they were the main reason that stopped me from giving this otherwise great series a 9/10.

What are your thoughts on this?

I'm about 3/4 the way through but agree with you completely. Their motivation is ridiculously flimsy - pathetic, even. It seems almost like they only exist to insert a cheap element of unpredictability into the story.

Yeah, I feel like the Teraists had a lot of potential, but they end up being kind of boring and one dimensional.

The narrator more or less spoils shit by saying what's going to happen before it does. Like at the end of an episode you might get straight up told what's going to happen five episodes later or similar. Don't know what was up with that :s

That was the only complaint I had constantly from start to finish (other than the animation quality but I can live with that)

I'm probably the only one who thinks that terrainism cult represents how the far right actually is in the real world. At least in my country, where religious groups/parties and the mullah have a lot of influence...like the cult in lotgh, they want to turn back time and take us all in the stone age, they're irrational, stupid, bigoted, often times violent (if not physically then verbally), and they provoke religious sentiments of the conservatives. Seriously, The terraists are like a cheesy version of the religious far right of my country (and probably most of muslim world)

"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

I thought it felt out of place. To me it seems like it was only there to have some bad guys. Other than the nobles that got eliminated in the first season.

The nobles were mostly portrayed as one-dimensional jerks (except Mariendorfs), but it had a point. It was obvious that they were first big obstacle for Reinheart on his way to galaxy domination.

Terraists however were introduced well later. It was even implied that they might be the most dangerous element Loengramm is going to face - a completely irrational suicidal group of people with huge influence and ties to the government. The possibilities for interesting conflicts were endless, just like chankljp said above.

But they ended up being a bunch of crazy people, blowing shit up all over the place. Huge wasted potential.

They did manage to kill, however, one of the smartest people in the Empire, my personal favorite - Oberstein. Though, I choose to believe that it was intentional on his part, narrator wasn't even sure himself.

I would say Terraists were the worst part of this show.

The cult itself was not developed fully.

But I think that was the point. Do you know what actually goes on inside Al Qaeda?

It was a way to show how random terrorism can have a major impact on history. Irrational beliefs and unpredictable behavior are difficult to stop.

If anything, the shows portrayal of the terraists was prophetic.

I agree. The Terraists were a rather one dimensional lot and sometimes came off as if they had wandered in from another shot. But I suppose that people like that can exist in real life too.

I disagree, I think the weakest aspect are the following characters.

1. Julian
2. Merkatz
3. (TBA)

Fortunately, one of them has ceased thanks to our great handsome Kaiser.

What was your problem with Merkatz?

OT: I see the role the author intended for the Terraist cult, but it did come off as a crazy group just for the sake of being a crazy group. Their unlimited ability to infiltrate anything was also an irksome issue for me.
