Yeh this lesson was a good reminder on how fame and money can easily ruin peoples lives. Dude forgot his family and focused more on becoming famous and making phat buck. Only until he realised how far he'd fallen was the damage done. Was a good Mushi tale and also lesson.
LMAO Ginko really scamming his friend like that xD i mean fair play he almost died trying to find the mountain

I just love that little CHILD.Yes the episode's plot was quite complex,we had to connect things to understand it. But at the end that poor little kid gave him inspiration and a new life. PS: That Kid is was so adorable,a little slow yes, but not at all trouble making.

I cried a lot watching and hearing the sickly slow growing child I hope that the child will grow healthy in the next 5 years
Totally agree. I too wish that little kid is fed a lot of local products and he grows up to be fine. She is such an adorable soul in the episode. So quiet and not bothering.

This episode is definitely my favourite! It makes me feel at ease, just like certain studio Ghibli movies do.

A unique characteristic to Mushi-shi is how uncertain whether a given episode would have a good, bad, or mixed ending. Episode are consistently melancholic with brief moments of levity, so it's hard to tell when a tragic occurrence will find an optimistic resolution or not. For what it's worth, despite his losses, I'm glad that the painter could rediscover his talents while having hope for his niece's recovery.

I didn't realize when he got those letters that he was burning them without reading them first!

His niece is sooo cute.

Nephew. That's his nephew

I'm watching it on DVD and the subs definitely referred to the kid as his niece. Was this a mistake? Is the Japanese word for a sibling's kid non-sexed and the subs choose the wrong word in English?

Curiously this episode seemed to be more pointless than most, I still loved it, but it did surprise me with the little narrative it had even for6the show's standards.

Really liked this one. Despite all the sorrow and sadness in the whole show there's a balm for the grief in its gentleness. The way mushi are just trying to exist like the rest of us, Ginko's insights, people moving on from pain or overcoming it.

Narratively, excellent episode. There wasn't as much focus on Mushis, especially in the first half of the chapter, and we were involved in a completely human plot.

We follow Kai's life since he was a child, when he decides to follow his dream with paintings, until when he finally manages to make it come true. However, there comes a time when the pleasure of the dream becomes an obligation, and his paintings cease to be alive, as he does not feel that way. From these events comes discouragement, anxiety and all of this is believable. It is possible to see in that situation something that happens on a daily basis.

It's sad to see how some events lead to others in a tragic way, and in this case how tiredness caused Kai to no longer read the letters of request he received, even though inside them there was correspondence from his sister and which could have caused him to he saved his family. Guilt, this is the feeling that remains.

It's gratifying to see that, returning to his Homeland, the character gets his happy ending - something that ends up involving Ginko. Speaking of the protagonist, he almost didn't appear in the episode, but the chapter could be equally magnificent, even without him.

This episode is on the list of the best in the work and Kai is on the list of the best characters presented in Mushishi.
