Chapters 73-78 were amazing!
Damnit, I cried at the end. The whole time I was just on the edge with excitement and inspiration.
It was beautiful. Reminded me of SlamDunk's final match.
What are you doing to me, Inoue? That mangaka is one of a kind, somehow he manages to transmit every bit of emotion from the paper into my heart.

I was a little disgruntled at first it was purely Shiratori but that didn't last long, another glorious set of chapters from Inoue. No other mangaka manages to channel the emotion Inoue does.

This chapter really brought the feels out of you, especially that wrestling match!

Any thoughts about the series thus far?

I feel a little bit dissapointed, i thought this was going to be a manga where Tomomi would dedicate his life to Natsumi helping her, getting his shit together in the process. You can see this being focused on in the beginning, then Natsumi seems to be just forgotten, and a text is the last thing that is hinted about her right before Tomomi's tryouts.

But then again it doesn't seem that even the author quite knows what direction he wants to go with this. The main focus seeeems to be wheelchair basketball, but i feel like he is sidetracking a bit too much... After a heavy focus on Tomomi and Natsumi in the beginning, even Tomomi seems to fall off as the main character, then Kiyoharu get's very heavily focused on, and becomes the new main characeter almost, and it would be nice to see more romance between him and Azumi. Since it's clearly there. Then several sidecharacter gets focused on as main characters in return.

It was really enjoyable to see how all the different characters handled their own accident and overcame their own disabillity, but by making all those sidecharacters main characters, it develops a lot of new questions and speculations! That most will probably go unanswered...

Like what will happen to Tomomi now?
What about his relationship with Natsum? Is there any romance there?
Will the wrestler reconnect with his daughter and wife? Will we see any more of him? Will we see anything more from the neet mr broomstick?
What has happened to Yamauchi? Is he dead? Cause it seemed like it in one chapter since his bed was empty, but we haven't gotten any clarification.
Takahashi will probably become Kiyoharu's rival. What actually is Azumi's future plans?

There is a lot of questions still unanswered, these are just some i came up with on the top of my head now, so i hope we will at least get some of them answered in the future, chapter 79 was released in 2014, and no new chapter has been released that i know of after that.

But overall, in the end, despite me being a bit negative on some parts, this is a genius manga, uniqe in many aspects, and really shows you in debth issues that normal people can end up in, how life can take unexpected turns.

Being a pro wrrestling fan i loved this arc, i almost cried, but yeah i also feel like you, from the synopsis i wasn't expecting so much basketball and other people stories, it would have been nice just the relation between and him and the girl.

I actually think that the side tracking with the focus on all those other characters is what makes REAL even better.

Personally I feel like the wheelchair basketball itself isn’t the main focus but more the mentality behind it and generally how humans can lose their path but shouldn’t give up hope.
I believe it’s really more about the human nature and similar to his work on Slam Dunk, the author seems to be going for “human’s greatness” as the major motif.

Though I can understand if you’re disappointed that side characters get more focus than the main ones at time; I feel this works really well for the structure of the series.
Whenever we “return” to the main characters, it feels really exciting and makes sense in the context of the plot.
(This also allows the author to skip some in between developments and focus on the more important /interesting things)
If he were to concentrate more on the main characters, their development would feel different and I personally would find it boring.
I also think that the focus on the side characters works well since in real life you really do meet all those people who make an impression on you.

You also brought up the question if those side characters will ever get their personal arcs and all those questions and speculations that arise from their screentime resolved, I also assume that some (or most) will probably go unanswered but I think that’s also just adding to the realistic tone.
I feel like the author is trying to show many different aspects or philosophies of people and some of them are just there to have the main characters get some more perspective. I actually like that!

I was also expecting more Natsumi and I thought that Tomomi would dedicate his life to helping her (like you) but I think that it’s better this way.
I assume that Tomomi realized that he can’t help Natsumi by staying by her side, the best thing he could do is find his own path and give her something to be proud of/happy about that way.
I also relate much more to him since he can’t get his shit together that easily and is constantly failing.

I agree, it would have been nice to see her being on Tomomi’s mind more often but then again, he probably is trying to only think of her when he accomplishes something she could be proud of (or if he’s hopelessly lost again).

I hope the other topics you brought up will be answered in future chapters!

One of the few people who Takahashi considered to be on-par with his level complimented his bad boy charm and that actually became the reason why he turned out to be such a stubborn and arrogant person. Hanasaki deciding to quit making up stuff in his letters and staying true to himself made him remember that the people around him were the ones who finally managed to make him open up to his real self. I cried manly tears as they cheered on for Shiratori as he fought one of the wildest matches they've ever had.

Takahashi's gonna join the Dreams, holy shit. It'll be a gigantic shock for Nomiya and Kiyo if they find him in the play-offs next year lmao

this is one of the best chapters i've ever read. from shiratori's opponent telling him to stand up, to takahashi's visual anology about him bottling his trueself up for years while everyone tried to look for the real him, until he finally opened up and with tears in his eyes. made me cry as well ngl, peak chapter.

Holy shit that one jar imagery of Takahashi made me nut all over the screen, couldnt edge any further. He's finally found some real friends to open up to, instead of being locked away in a box because of his dickish attitude. Good for him for joining the dreams aswell, its about damn time that he gets into basketball again.

Shiratori's arc is nothing short of amazing. I really dont know what else to say. It proves that nothing (or at least most things) aren't impossible. But yea one of my favorite volumes of this manga so far. The pay-off was just outstanding. Time to wipe my boxers
